NHL.com social media put out their top 16 teams entering the playoffs. No Flames, Jets come in at 15.
Not that the Flames have much to complain about being an 8 seed, but I get the feeling it's a team without much of an identity that doesn't engender strong feelings outside it's fanbase. Minnesota Wildesque.
I kind of like that everyone has written the Flames off.

A team that scores more than their opponent is not getting outplayed.
The Jets don't out score opponents five on five, they have at 49.3% goal split and have given up 142 goals and scored 138.
So I guess by your "deep" analysis, they're not good five on five. But you're right, the Flames are worse at -13.
Also, you keep repeating that it's all about Hellebuyck, which is objectively clearly just false, because once again the Jets also score goals at a decent pace, and again it's an argument only someone who literally ignores goals could make.
The Jets actually score goals five on five at the exact same pace as the Flames. The teams are ranked 19th and 20th at 2.35/60 and 2.34/60.
So the five on five difference between the teams comes down to team defense and the ability of their goaltenders. The Jets have a higher Shots against/60 (slightly), xGA/60 (3rd worst), SCA/60 (8th worst), High Danger against per 60 (2nd worst) ... but have the 9th best team save percentage five on five and you want to hammer me for thinking this is about their goaltender?
I honestly don't get how you see it any other way?
Who is ahead in the exhibition series in xGF% Vancouver or Calgary?
I was hoping Hellebuyck may look shaky last night but he was in mid-season form. If the first line was rolling I would think the Flames may be able to overcome the goaltending deficit but they haven't really got hot all year and didn't look impressive against the Oilers. I just don't know if the Flames are going to be able to score enough goals to offset the ones the Jets will surely get past Flames leaky netminders.
I agree that Hellebuyck is going to be the difference maker. When a goalie is able to stop everything he sees, you need to get into the dirty areas for deflections and rebounds to get anything past him. The Flames just don't do that consistently enough throughout the lineup. Especially the first line.
I just don't see how Winnipeg is the clear cut favourite. Ehlers got hurt last night, little isn't going to play, our D core has been picked apart by bad management and injuries. This is a 5 game series and anyone saying something different is trying to hedge against losing.
How bad was Ehlers injured?
With playoffs coming down to goaltending, hard to see how the Jets aren't the favorite. Rittich hasn't exactly proven to be stellar under pressure. That being said, I'll be happy to be proved wrong.

Ehlers injury might get passed to the rest of the team. Lowry-Copp-Rosolvic would be the Flames 4th line if they got to play at all.
If the Flames can't beat the jets and at least one other team, they really need to make some sweeping changes. The jets area completely beatable team, the Flames need to hit their stride and Ward has to motivate them. If Ritich can't be a .915 goalie, they need to move on. It seems every shot he faces makes me hold my breath (when I get to watch). I hope these playoffs/playins are full of defining moments for some of the guys. I believe they can do it, I just don't really trust them to do it.

If the Flames beat the Jets, our focus needs to be on getting a top 6 center or top line RW.
If the Flames lose to the Jets, our focus needs to be on getting a top 6 center or top line RW, an established veteran coach, and a proven goaltender.
Of course, everything in the second example would be nice regardless, but this is a moment for Ward and Rittich to prove themselves and prove that they've earned their place. If we make it past Winnipeg, I'm less concerned with the two though the first playoff series is still going to have a big say in their futures, but if we don't, then they both need to go, no question.

My favourite part of this post is the passive aggressive capitalization of the
Flames and not capitalizing the "jets". Good stuff
sorry, made the post on my phone. For some reason I guess I've used the words "jet" and "jets" in conversations and not capitalized them due to being in the middle of a sentence. When speaking about "Flames" it's always in regards to the Calgary Flames and it just automatically capitalizes it.
I'm truly sorry you believe I was being passive aggressive because that wasn't my intention. I do hope that you develop thicker skin and don't take offense to things like this in the future because being a Jets fan is going to get you teased a lot in the near future.
jets Suck.
...see what I did there?

Well most outsiders look at the Flames as underachievers that perennially choke in the playoffs. Their best forwards have slumped all season and the goaltending is at or near the bottom of all the teams left so I can understand why a lot of people aren't high on the Flames. It's worth noting that Dom Luszczyszyn's model at the Athletic gives the Flames a 60% chance of winning which is one of the highest probabilities of the qualifying round teams.
