Keep in mind I'm the states. Before the internet video/radio feeds, not much Flams coverage down here..
Ya, flames coverage doesn't matter chris cuthbert was the number 1 guy for like a decade plus on TSN . I use to think he was the best only second to Bob cole but I think ball does a better job now.

Ball, on the other hand, is Cuthbert when he was in his CBC days, interesting, impartial, pays attention to the game on the ice and intracicies, and has the right pitch and the right amount of emotion when the game calls for it.
Oh my take on Cuthbert has nothing to do with Ball, love that guy. I'm stunned he hasn't gone national yet.. though I'll take it, if it means more Flames games for him. Cuthbert is just my guy, going back to being a little kid and first discovering hockey. He's literally my version of the way an Ontarioan views Cole (even when he was kinda lost by the end). All that said, it's a crime Ball won't be calling any playoffs at all.
I agree to hold on to the coach discussion until after this thing is done. But that Haynes tweet instantly made me think "I hope he's making the decisions for game 1."
I didn't see a lot of Robinson when he was up, but from clipping the highlights during that time he looked pretty good. Obviously not 1st line material, but on a 4th line I think he'd bring a lot.
Sportsnet only showing Oiler goals for highlights lol...not just online but on TV too
when people wonder why we think they are biased Oiler homers
By the time Saturday comes around, the legend of McDavid’s dominant performance will grow on Snet into rumours of Connor on the forefront of finding the Covid vaccine. The entire first 10 minutes of that game will all be about him.

wait you are being sarcastic, I think. I've lost the ability to tell anymore.
...it's not sarcasm . Addressing the coaching, the goaltending, and capitalizing on our biggest asset in a trade in order to restructure things while backfilling with another top tier winger just seems like smart management. Difficult to execute blah blah blah, but I mean...it'd just be nice to see.
I hate losing to Edmonton even if the game is meaningless. I won’t read too much into the short sample but definitely concerning to see a lack of finish and below average goaltending. That is exactly how they could lose to the Jets who are even more reliant on timely goals and saves than the Oilers. Hopefully the rust is now off. Bring on the play in!

Not a bad showing all things considered. Bennett beats Smith and Mangiapane puts it into the wide-open net and we're looking at a way different ending.
Go Flames!
And if Larsson didn’t get lucky and get a piece of that Johnny wrap around. And if that bad bounce didn’t happen......

Ball was national one or two seasons for the late HNIC game, maybe it was as a backup to Mark Lee, but he was regularly on there, and it seemed too good to be true when it was said he was replacing the amateur Rob Kerr.

I still think Rittich can be okay, but I don’t think he’s a top 10 goalie.
31 goalies have played over 6000 minutes the last three seasons and he ranks 23rd in save percentage in that group. So a serviceable tandem starter type and really not all that bad for his first three full seasons in the NHL.
I do think the thing with him is focus, and not letting a bad goal get to him.
So He’s been able to make the tough save but he needs to get better at ensuring he can focus on not letting any soft goals in.
The talent is there, he just needs to focus, and sometimes that takes time with goalies. Guys like Markstrom, Lehner, etc didn’t all take the world by storm in their first three years in the NHL either .

CGY did good things but will have to improve in their end. Too many times CGY had puck, with time, in defensive zone and gave it to them. It wasn’t all game but it kept them defending when they should have been out.
Many examples of good individual performances but need to play together and have waves of attack - which they are more than capable. When the games count I see them buying in completely and ratcheting up every aspect.
It was good to have a competitive test, analyze the performances and focus on their process.

No doubt he’s not top 10 right now, but he has potential and I wouldn’t write him off yet.
Markstrom is a guy that was great for Vancouver this year and who people have mentioned as a UFA, and here are there numbers at the same age.
Markstrom: .912 (29th among qualified goalies those seasons)
HDSV% - .830
MDSV% - .912
LDSV% - .961
The guys Rittich actually most closely resembles right now are Matt Murray in Pittsburgh, who’s put up very similar results the last three years.
Overall - .909
HDSV% - .832
MDSV% - .891
LDSV% - .966
Or old man Henrik Lundqvist
Overall - .910
HDSV% - .833
MDSV% - .887
LDSV% - .964
So Rittich isn’t a top 15 goalie at this point but for an unheralded guy in his first 3-4 seasons in the NHL / North America he’s done okay and just needs to clean up his game mentally.
And it’s why I hope they start him come Saturday. He’s still young enough and has shown enough potential to be a long term piece here still. Let’s see if he can step up his game come playoff time.
