Anyone who knows what they are looking for will be able to spot it as a half-canvas suit. That being said, at the price point, you are getting descent quality, as well as Brooks Brothers type cuts.
Brooks Brothers also has a traditional American fit to it, so good for larger people.
Harry Rosen also has a sale on the "Boss" and "Z Zegna" brand suits, for about $450-600. These will be trendier cuts and colours, but similar quality to the Brookscool. Despite valid warnings about buying too trendy, many of these will be classic cuts/colours too.
Honestly, if you're buying off the rack like this, and you're a slightly odd shape, I'd just try a bunch on until you find the closest fit. That may even be the $250-300 Frankenstein separate suit and pants from the Bay or even H & M.
Whatever you buy at your price range will likely suffer from the same failings in terms of quality and not last more than a few wears a year, but that might be what you're going for.
Also, no one will look down on you for wearing a charcoal or navy suit to a funeral.

My understanding was that Sliver was planning to use the suits less than half a dozen times a year which at that price point and quality, seems like it would be perfectly fine for for quite a few years.
Your points are valid though.

BTW those CK suits at the Bay are on clearance for $160, if you can find your size (I am sure Sliver won't, but for anyone else).

I can never find a suit that fits me from retail stores. Either the sleeves are too long or the body is too tight (I am a fat guy, alright?) Or I can't find the colour/material that I want.
For great budget tailored suits, I went to Indochino at Chinook. I got a 3 piece suit a couple of years ago for like $500 and they do all measurements from head to toe and have it tailor-made. You can customize it anyway you want too (1/2/3/4 buttons, lepel size, single/double vent, etc.) It fits me perfectly.
Some people say it is cheap quality, but for me who wear a suit less than 1 time a year, it's ok. At least I fitted well in it...
Don't know how they operate now under COVID.

If you insist on buying a suit off the rack at a retail store, then buy the suit that fits you in the torso/shoulder and get the sleeves tailored.
Yes, the sleeves will look like you're a child wearing your dad's suit when you try it on, but you can either fix the suit or fix the wearer. My personal thoughts on alterations can be summed up as most clothing should have some amount of tailoring done to them if you want them to fit you the best they can.

From discussions with my tailor, if buying a suit off the rack, the critical thing that can't really be altered is the shoulder. So as long as those fit, it can be tailored to a good fit. Within reason, of course.

I didn't see this thread originally and caught it all up yesterday. I hope it keeps going as I could use the help as well.
All my jeans rip in the butt too which I saw somebody else mention and I've never been able to figure out why.
My solution if I don't have a girl along is to walk the malls until I see something I like on display and then buy the entire outfit. Seems to work ok.

Typically, jeans will rip at the butt when they don't fit just right.

For most men, crotch rot is the first place most jeans will wear out (kids go through knees first).
This is 'repairable' if you feel the jeans are worth the additional investment ($30-$50).
Things to maximize the life of your jeans:
- Buy better quality and/or heavier weight
- Launder infrequently (I can go 2 - 3 years between washes with weekly wearing). Obviously this wouldn't work with 'job-site jeans'.
- Have enough pairs to allow your jeans to rest/dry-out between wears - at least 3 - 4 days between wears
- Ensure proper fit
As for look - Display manikins are a fine way to get a feel for what types of looks you prefer. My cautions: 1) They usually feature outfits that have a high profit-margin for the store so you are unlikely to get a deal; and, 2) They typically display 'trends' rather than 'style' so they will look dated more quickly than is necessary.
Men are pretty lucky in that if you can ignore a lot of the trendy stuff, you can expect a lot of quality pieces to still 'look good' in 10 years.

In my experience, this is the #1 factor of crotch rot in jeans.
If you only have one or two favorite pairs that you're wearing basically daily, it doesn't matter how good the quality is, or what the weight of the denim is, you're going to have holes in your crotch in no time.

This. Go to Dutil.
I’ve been wearing Nudies for ~15 years. Dont have my originals, but have a pair that’s probably 10 years old. Repaired a few times, and feel like jogging pants now. Love em.
Denim only requires a few, high quality pairs.

Yeah... any jeans you buy from Dutil also come with unlimited free repairs (am I remembering this correctly?)
So if anyone finds their jeans are getting destroyed pretty quickly, go check them out.

Pulled my collection of raw denim out of storage. I'll post some pics.
But yes, crotch blowout is a huge issue for me. I had a few high quality pairs (Samurais, Levi's Vintage Collection) that I repaired until there was basically no original crotch material. I find the more I workout, and the bigger my legs get, the more of an issue it is.

These are still, for me, the best jeans anyone ever made.

But reasonable people can differ on that. If you're looking for durability, I suggest Iron Heart.

For that budget I would recommend going to Indochino (they have a store in chinook), unfortunately, since it's for a funeral I assume the timeline won't work, as it'll be a few weeks to get the suit back from there.
For colour, I would stay away from black. Black suits aren't the most versatile.
Go with a dark/medium grey. It'll still be appropriate for a funeral, and you can wear it for other things without looking like you're going to a funeral.
|
Yeah, grey for sure.
One of my blazers still has the memorial program from Jeff Bird’s memorial. I can’t bear to do anything with it.
