Strome has 89 points in 116 games over the last 2 seasons with Chicago.

Why would they consider that?

But that's a mere 50 points more than Sam has during the last 2 seasons!

Ya you are probably right. Why would Chicago even make him available? Shouldn’t they want a 23 year old center that has scored at a 63pt pace since they acquired him?

UFA talent doesn't win championships. Except for Chara. That's it, that's the list. (also Hossa and Niedermayer on undervalued deals under the old cap)

The list of elite UFAs that change teams isn't that long, but the failure rate seems to be just as high as for the mid-tier talent oft referred.

In my mind, we need more speed on this team. Strome is not fast at all.

Strome and Monahan would be a slow 1-2 punch up the middle.

They're are high IQ guys though, so they'd flourish as long as you have good wingers. Gaudreau, Tkachuk and Lindholm are good wingers, Mangiapane is also coming along OK, and if you add Hall....well that's probably too much cap, but it could work I think if the price is right.

Chicago just traded a pretty darn good player in Schmaltz for Strome. Trading Strome for Bennett would further that as a Chiarelli-like progression of asset depreciation.

I think that we would have problems with fast teams if we were that slow down the middle, along with Tkachuk, who is not a great skater, and Lucic-who is ok for his size, but not a burner. Also take into account that Strome hasn't developed anything resembling a 200 ft game, he's pure offense, and not just slow, but SLOOOOOW.

Never been a fan of Strome, feels like he got put into the right situation in Chicago and did well with the opportunity but now he's going to get paid. He wasn't good at all in Arizona and is one dimensional and slow.

IMO the biggest need for this team going into next year is down the middle, not on RW. I am absolutely fine with Gaudreau, Lindholm, Tkachuk and Mangiapane being the top 6 wingers on this team for next season, or if we trade Gaudreau and sign Hall so be it.

Monahan is a solid producing centerman, and Backlund is a very good all around center. If we could get another center it would make our top 9 more dangerous.

Now if it was Strome, and I agree he has plenty of warts, but I don't think his acquisition cost will be that high, Chicago has cap issues and they have Dach who is ready to take over as the #2 center on that team. We could put Strome with Tkachuk and Mangiapane, which would put Backlund on a 2nd line with Lucic and Dube. If there is a center on this team that would be able to get the most out of Lucic it would be Backlund, he has a great ability to get the most out of his linemates.

It isn't a great fit, and I would rather target a top 6 center in return for Gaudreau, whether that be Necas, Frost, Cozens, or Newhook.

One guy that could be available is Lars Eller, Washington is going to be looking to get rid of cap and they have Connor McMichael who will be ready to play in the NHL next year. Eller has 3 more years at $3.5m, he is an effective 3rd line center who can play up the lineup if there are injuries.

Also if Erik Haula makes it to free agency he is a guy who can play down the middle and can still skate.

But we have Ryan on the bottom, we don't need another Ryan. We need a center better than Monahan.

Offer sheet Barzal. He would be in the top 5 centers to ever play for the Flames.

I would agree with that, but it is easier said than done. Really the only way we are accomplishing that is by drafting a center, or hoping we get a top line center in return for Gaudreau, and realistically the only way that is happening is if we trade for a young center and hope they develop into a number 1. Someone like a Cozens, Necas, Frost or Newhook.

We don't need better than Monahan, we need better than Bavklund. We need another scoring threat center. Push Backlund to 3 c and so on.

I doubt Barzal signs anything less than 7 years at $12m as an offer sheet. I like Barzal a lot, but that would kill our cap.

Not to mention 4 x unknown 1st round assets is an insane offering for any player.

This is where I am at, mostly because it is more attainable.

I don't have an issue with Backlund at all and think he is doing a fine job as a 2nd line center, but if we did get another option to go with Tkachuk and Mangiapane, it would put Backlund on the 3rd line and all of a sudden we would have 3 line who can push play and offense, as opposed to relying on 2 lines.
