I really don't know what to do with Bill Peters. Led the team to a terrific regular season, but then fired for racist behavior, with another club. How much does that impact his ranking here? I'm not sure. But for me it has to be considered.
For now went with Brian Sutter.

Keenan got my vote this round.

TBH, I would be perfectly fine not personally voting for Bill Peters till the last round. It is not just the racist behavior, but the lack of owning up that makes me do that.

I don't know what to think anymore to be honest, Al MacNeil just got voted in 6th place despite having coached the 3rd most games for the Flames and only being ranked 12th in win%. He also never coached anywhere else save for one season in Montreal

Then you have Keenan still floating out there, 4th in win % here in CGY to go along with 1386 NHL games coached in his career, and 672 wins all time. I get that it's a best Flames coach list, but you'd think a career like that would carry some weight if being 4th in win % wasn't enough to get a sniff of the top 5.

I have been voting Keenan for a view rounds now. Whatever your opinion about his style and approach, I maintain that the 2009 (?) Flames were the best Flames team since... and the best in the NHL until injuries and lack of depth did them in.

For me, whether they coached elsewhere before or after doesn't matter to me - as I'm evaluating their performance while here only.
But that's what makes this fun - everyone can decide how to decide for themselves.

I went with Kenan.

The team underperformed in 2007-2008 but did take SJ to game 7 that year coming in as the 7th seed.

In 2009, they were rolling along until they started to run out of defensive depth.
In the playoffs, Phanuef and Sarich were banged up and both missed a game. Even in the games that they played, it was clear that they were not 100%. The only 4 Defensemen healthy enough to play all 6 games were:
Jordan Leopold
Adrian Aucoin
Adam Pardy
Jim Vandermeer

Leopold without Regehr was a disaster and the only other serviceable defensemen that they had available was Anders Eriksson, who dressed for 2 games as well.

Won't be voting for Peters at any point in this poll,

Went Brian Sutter this round as I feel he squeezed everything he could have out of those teams.

Yeah I agree, still doesn't explain how the 12th best win % coach gets voted in 6th place while the 4th best win % coach is still out there as we vote for 7th in the ranking.

The argument is he's one of the few coaches that managed to get a run out of a Flames team.

You can't really compare winning percentages from before and after the introduction of the shootout. In MacNeil's time, there wasn't even regular season OT.

For example, Gulutzan's record for 2 seasons was 82-68-14, but that includes 16 OT and 6 SO wins. If every game that was tied after 60 minutes went into the books as a tie, like they did in MacNeil's day, Gulutzan's record would have been 60-68-36.

MacNeil's record for 2 seasons in Calgary was 68-61-31. Who knows what it would have been with 3-on-3 OT (especially with a guy like Nilsson) and a shootout.

In the end, coaches are judged by how their teams do in the playoffs. The fact is, only 4 coaches have ever taken this team past the second round of the playoffs and MacNeil is one of them.

Voted for Peters but I didn't like it.

Fact is he had the team playing at such a high level for a whole season, which is more than many coaches on the list can say.

We're at the stage where for all remaining coaches my feelings are either neutral or negative, so I'm giving my vote to Ward this round as an expression of hope for August and beyond.
