Default Pressure Welders...Oil fields...

I have a friend, from GTA, looking for work in Alberta, primarily pressure welding, as he has his certificate.

I have no background in any oil and gas jobs, so I'm kinda clueless in which way to help him.

And ideas?

Get him to demonstrate that he has a pulse.

Seriously, best way is knowing someone ... know anyone personally in O&G?

If not, just go to large company websites, they usually have a million jobs on there. Sometimes large companies will hire the trade and figure it out later. Does your friend want to live near Cgy, or wherever there is work?

He lives in Toronto right now, has 15 years experience welding, and 3 years as a pressure welder.

And no, I don't have many friends in the O&G industry, which is why I'm asking.

He wants to come out west in the spring.

All he has to do is walk into any welding shop. Seriously, that's it. Huge demand for B-pressure welders right now. They will make him weld some pipe and other assorted items to make sure he knows his stuff, then probably start the next day. Does he want to live in Calgary?

Red Deer and Nisku would be the place to start.

If he's quite willing to work anywhere, he can just get a job posting on websites. Starting at a large company is a good way to learn the industry, any kind of specific training will be better, pay will be ok, benefits will be good.

Last thought is it would be good to work in marketable areas like Peace River / Ft Mac / Ft Sask where many companies are working, that way you can build contacts quicker. I'm not in trades but the industry as a whole is very relationship and reputation based.

He just mentioned moving west to Alberta. I think he is more concerned with finding a good job and getting settled in than anything else.

I think just showing up in Fort Mac should do it. Sounds like your buddy has some skills and there is a couple major projects going right now.

Tell him just to go to the pipefitters,Boilermakers or Millwright union halls in Edm,and he should be able to write his own paycheque.Spring time is crazy busy.Don't go to Fort mac without any contacts, lots of work but hard to find without going through the proper chanells.Trust me.

I think your right Brownie. Lots of work in Fort Mac but getting the right gig needs a little investigation.

for the construction industry, Calgary also has it's own locals serving southern Alberta. Ironworkers is another option. Fort Mac has a local also but I'd go through Calgary or Edmonton looking for a camp job or a per diem to get his feet wet locally until he finds where he wants to be and finds a place to live. Phoning ahead is also a good idea, he may get a promise of work. I'd want something a little more solid than guys on here saying there is lots of work. Things change day to day.

What sort of work was he doing in Toronto? Pre-pressure welding history included..

Is he just looking for local work, or potentially going to the oil sands?

Hell, just tell him to drive through Nisku. When i was in nisku this summer i'd count about 8 different signs hiring welders and various tradespeople on my way to work.

He just wants information, so he can call and ask around.

I'm passing everything along that I can find, so its up to him.

A buddy of mine is a welder in Grande Prairie. He has had a lot of down time this year. Just a small ripple from the drilling slow down.
