The way I like to see forwards next year:
Hall-Monahan-???
Tkachuk-Lindholm-Mangiapane
Czarnik-Ryan-Dube
Lucic-Gawdin-Phillips
Trade chips to acquire top line RW - Gaudreau, Backlund, Bennett

With the amount of ice time Czarnik got, no way he comes back here. I for one thought he deserved more ice time, but Peters thought otherwise.
Czarnik would be better off signing with a bottom feeder, getting lots of ice time, and proving himself worthy of a bigger and better longer term contract(s).
I also don't think Lucic would do well with two rookie players on his line. Sure, he can defend them, but not much else. Ryan was a pivotal reason why Lucic had a little success this season.

Yeah, that's why I was a bit iffy where to place Lucic. Protection was my biggest reasoning as Phillips is small. I do think its time the Flames bring up some of these rookies and just let them play instead of guys like Rieder.

Yeah, Phillips and Gawdin were both near a point per game in the AHL this year. Are they NHLers or no? Lets find out.

Eklund posting that he is hearing the Islanders are fearing a Barzal offer sheet.
I don’t see Lou letting it get there so if he were to put Barzal on the block what is he looking for? Unfortunately for the Flames I would think they would be looking for a high end player on an ELC.
Could there be any way a deal around Gaudreau or Monahan for Barzal could happen/work?

There's so many rumours of top end centres available. Barzal, Eichel, Barkov. If any of these guys are out there, I'd be pushing all-in to get them. Basically anything that wouldn't #### up the team.

I agree Tkachuk and Lindholm are the 2 players I would absolutely try to hold onto. Fortunately the Flames have several other really good assets they could consider moving and Brad is not afraid to make a big trade.

Doesn’t help their cap situation though. Gaudreau+Mangipane is likely the same cap hit as Barzal.
Islanders have $10M of cap space with Pulock and Barzal to sign. They likely have so much regret for that Pageau trade and sign right now.

I haven't heard anything on Barkov...what rumors?
i think most of this is wishful thinking.
Buffalo will do everything to surround Eichel with better players before they trade him.
I haven't heard anything about Barkov coming out of Florida.
Maybe there's a bit of smoke with Barzal.

If there is any chance Barkov is available you throw a package they can’t refuse. That’s the one player where you consider trading anyone but Tkachuk and maybe Lindholm.

Florida falls into the Buffalo camp of needing to surround their star with some better players, possibly at the cost of some serious young assets and prospects.
Lou has already said that he would match any offer sheet on Barzal.

If any of those high end centers become available, you do whatever it takes to get them. As for Barzal, I would for sure throw an offer sheet at him or work something out with lou where they sign him and trade him to the Flames. I'd give up a few first round picks, Valamaki, whatever for him. Kid is legit.
If they can trade Johnny for a good return, sign Hall and somehow get Barzal or a different high end C it would be nuts. If the choice is between Hall and a guy like Barzal, it should be obvious. Then you try and convice Hall to sign a cheap one year deal to try and win a cup.

He said that before the flat cap happened. If he's going to match an offer sheet, he likely won't have room to sign other players needed to fill the roster and will have to move some to make room.

I think any GM will say that every time. Not saying it just invites an offer sheet.
Sure, most of the time with offer sheets, the other team will match, so it is a relatively safe bet that he would match. But there is probably a number somewhere that would have to make him consider the option. I hope the Flames are not the ones that cross that line into the ludicrous zone though. If we were going to go the ludicrous route, I would go for Dubois over Barzal.

Of course Lou will say he's going to match any offer sheet, but a $10 million+ AAV contract with their cap situation would be a frigging disaster for them. If Barzal is going to be difficult for them to sign for whatever reason, then you come hard with an offer and hope he washes his hands of the situation.
I would offer Monahan + because Monahan gives them a 25 year old 1C coming back who is under contract for 3 more years at a rate that is much cheaper than what Barzal will command. In three years several of their bad contracts will be off the books so extending Monahan then would in all likelihood be easier than extending Barzal now. I don't know what the plus would have to be.
Any sane organization wouldn't move Barkov, but the Panthers are not really a sane organization. They were looking to shed money before the COVID shut down, who knows how desperate they are now? Barkov only has two more seasons too, and then he will command a massive extension but there is time to deal with that.
Point is another one that should never move, but just have a look at Tampa's cap situation. If you can't get them to budge on Point then I'd be going hard after Cirelli next who is an RFA and needs an extension that will take up just about every last penny of their remaining cap space next season, then they still need to extend RFAs Sergachev and Cernak, add 2 MORE defenseman after that and still a couple more forwards too.
Eichel is only getting trade if he demands it. I'm thinking his camp might have been close this summer, and that's part of the reason the Sabres fired everybody but the janitor.

if Barkov became available, you throw everything their way. We'd have to figure out where to move salary for next year.
But, if you could acquire Barkov, sign Hall, then we are looking nasty. Trade away Backlund, Bennett, Gaudreau, Kylington, and Ryan if needs be.

Yeah I think these **cheap** PPG AHL kids should be filling in your bottom six or at least getting reps there.
Time to allocate spending were you need it most if the cap is leveling off. Bennett and Jankowski have had their opportunity to shine in bottom six roles and hardly have justified being there over some motivated league minimum players.

I don’t see many scenarios where this makes our roster any better.
Czarnik, Gawdin and Phillips in the bottom 6?
I don’t really see how that makes our bottom 6 production any better and that has been a major hinderance to the team this year.
Not to mention losing Backlund and Gaudreau in the top 6 for player unknown and Hall.
In Bennett’s case I hope we keep him and play him on the 3rd line with someone he has actually shown some chemistry with in Dube.
Not to pick your idea apart but do you actually think Gawdin and Phillips are both ready for regular NHL duty and Czarnik as well?
Our depth will be non-existent if we run into injuries.
