I completely understand this. Good luck in your future endeavors. You were an okay Calgary Flame Travis. Your daughter's well-being is much more important than this stupid game

Clearly Travis himself after making the decision ran to this forum to see exactly how people would react and judge accordingly.

It is just a gut instinct, but I feel after a break like this, that this team is going to come back like the team that won our conference.

“Meh, no loss”
“Positive on ice outcome”
“Glad he won’t be playing with Hanifin anymore”
Stupid, stupid posts.

Like I mentioned in the post, I 1000% respect Hamonic's decision and wish him nothing but the best, but the numbers do support that this is honestly a likely positive on-ice outcome for the Flames.
Nothing wrong in stating facts. Especially when I supplied the numbers to back it up in my next post. Not like I was hating on him for not playing.
Simmer down, Knut.

Hamonic doesn’t want to make any enemies with his future teammates so he is taking a pass

This is probably a dumb question, but if a player is opting out does that mean he can't change his mind later?
What if the Flames are miraculously in the finals and suffer several injuries, can Hamonic decide to play suddenly and re-join the team?
I'm sure the chances of that happening are basically zero because it wouldn't look good if you initially cited family health reasons, but who knows.
Or what if another player opts out because of a sick family member that recovers at a later date.

Hamonic has given his heart to this game, on and off the ice. If he needs to step back for a moment, he has earned it.

I personally think Harmonic has decided he wants to move on from the Flames.

If Hamonic has played his last game for the Flames, he had a good run. The one thing you can’t question is that the guy battled his arse off for the team, and didn’t back down from anyone when it came to defending his teammates. Not to mention what he did in the community with his “D-Partner” program for kids who have lost their parents at a young age.
Not interested in debating acquisition costs or how he would have slotted into the current lineup. Maybe a topic for another day.
Thanks Hammer.

I would guess the answer is no, but looking at the MOU, it doesn't specifically say you can't opt back in ... so, by the Air Bud "ain't no rule says a dog can't play basketball" precedent, "ain't no rule says a player can't opt in to play after he opted out".

It sounds like you've been touched personally by this disease, either yourself or a family member. I'm so sorry to hear this, and I really hope everything is going to be ok for you. I will pray for you and yours.

Picture this!
Just entering the Stanley Cup finals. Flames pulled of a miracle come back against Colorado in 7 games.
But in the series before that we lost Hanifin.
Andersson is day to day with a hair line fracture trying to push through.
Gio just went down in game 7 but we got through to the finals.
Chase every option we have in our bullpen, or I guess ask Anders Errikson again if he will come play.
It's a unique what if?
Just remember why our last 04 run caved in on ittself, no depth or farm team.
And our 08/09 team with our catastrophic back end injuries.

Well this isn't community theatre, they are professional athletes
I don't need to have an opinion on the man's personal decision and he is well within his right to do what he is doing. As a fellow human, and a player on my favorite team whose effort can never be questioned, I wish nothing but the best for him and his family.
As others have said, I don't see this having a negative impact on the ice unless the Flames make a deep run and have a rash of injuries. I don't expect we'll see him back and wouldn't be surprised if he is playing for our play-in opponent next year.

Honestly, I realized after reading those posts that i missed bickering about hockey much more then i enjoy bickering over covid/pandemic posts or stupid American drama the past few months. Feels like I'm home again.
Best of luck to Hammer and his family.
