Calgary Flames All Time Roster - #2 Defenseman

			So some details ...
 1. Calgary players only
 2. I'll look at games played, production and PPG to list options.
 3. My cut off won't effect options as I'll go deeper than required
 4. I'll label them by rank (3rd line LW) but don't select the player that matches that role the best, pick the best player.

 Day to Day

We elect a position, say 2nd line RW, remove that name and do the 3rd line RW the next day.

I'll post a summary as we go along.

 Calgary Flames All Time Roster

I like Suter, and I think he should probably be in the Hall of Fame, but Gio is a Norris-winning defenseman and has been on the team for ages.

No reason to break up one of the all time great defensive pairings that won the organization it's only Stanley Cup.

To me Suter is like Mullen in that he is underappreciated for what he brought to the table because of the depth on the team at that time. Suter and Giordano should be a lot closer in voting than they are.

Gio probably wins this one with a decent margin. I’ll probably vote Regehr for #3

I love Reg, but Gio is as responsible as Reg ever was in his own end, plus he puts up very decent offensive numbers. In his Norris year, I think Gio was the best Flame and should have been in the conversation for the Hart. Reg was never the best player on his team.
I may be misremembering, but didn't Reg go a couple years in a row with zero goals?

#3 is Suter easily for me. I don't know if some people realize how good he was.

Housley not even in the conversation? Hall of Famer with 1200+ career points. Wasn't on the cup team, but played more years than Gilmour with the Flames. More than a ppg player for a couple of seasons in his career.

I'm guessing most people didn't vote for him for the same reasons you didn't. He is underrated though.

Phaneuf only played 378 games as a Flame and Housley only 328.

At this stage it's hard to vote against a guy who has been team captain of seven seasons and Norris trophy winner. After Gio is in though, Housley definitely deserves consideration. Brodie has had his name raised more than Housley, which is pretty nuts if just picking the best player.

I'm curious to see where Bouwmeester and Hamilton slot in.

I almost did go Suter here too. Having him emerge in 85-86 really helped the Flames make what was a charm between them and Edmonton into a gap. He did play in a higher scoring era but still has a 91 and 81 point season and two others over 70 to his credit. Plus he was an all zones defender too. I think the trio of him, Vernon and Mullen were critical additions that made the Flames a lot tougher for the Oilers than the previous teams had been.
Ultimately I still went Giordano because of era adjustment for the offensive numbers and the fact that he has been the top guy for an extended run here.

very comfortable voting Gio here. am also comfortable throwing out our Gio-Macinnis (homegrown) pairing against what most teams can offer (as long as Orr or Lidstrom aren't out there) as two guys that can play the game anyway you like

anyways having said that I wanted to acknowledge 2 similarities between Suter and Gio
 1. They both were like surprise Christmas presents for the team- one a very late draftpick the other a wandering walk on
 2. They hoth had their playoff 'legacy' tainted in part by injury- Suter a huge member of the 86 and 89 clubs but injuries prevented him for seeing either run through to conclusion; Gio almost always (for a fairly healthy guy) running into injuries in key seasons when the team was poised to do something
