Dougie also skipped out on the year-end meeting with Treliving / garbage day / media availability, and then wouldn't return calls for over a week according to Loubardias.
I think it's safe to say there was a significant issue between the player and the team over something.
This is all that matters.
It appears that Hamilton wanted off the team, doesn't really matter what the Flames felt at that point but for some reason it seems like the tensions got to the point where he wanted off the team.
At that point they went and got what at the time was a pretty decent return for him.
Could the Flames still use a guy like Dougie on the blueline? Sure they could. But if he's going to act like what AC describes above you have to trade him. And still to this day I think a trade involving Lindholm and Hamilton straight up would be pretty fair, IMO Lindholm is our most well rounded player and he's on a great contract now.
I also don't think it's a coincidence that Gio went crazy the following year and won the Norris, there were lots of rumours that he had something to prove and didn't love playing with Dougie.

Boston wanting to sign him and him refusing being turned into "given up on him" is such a joke.
I think the fact 2 teams traded a 6’5, right shot, smooth skating Dman who is a lock for 40pts before he turned 25 is telling.
Why did he refuse to sign with Boston?
Why did he skip town and not return the Flames calls when the 2018 season ended.
Speculation on my part is it all had to do with his brother. Boston refused to bring in Freddie so he refused to sign. Once the Flames agreed to bring Freddie in he basically signed the same contract the Bruins offered him. He pouted the day his brother was claimed on waivers and then skipped garbage bag day in a year where the team massively underperformed.
Based on those observations I see an immature young man that this organization decided to part with. He is a great player no doubt but the team made a move to get a critical missing piece in an all situations right shot forward. Trade worked out for both but the Flames likely don’t move Dougie if it was not for certain behaviors.
Don’t forget Dougie’s name was swirling in trade rumors at the 2016 draft just one year after the Flames acquired him. Where there is smoke.....

I agree there is smoke. I'm just not sure it's Hamilton who's the fire. If he can't get along with his teammates because they like to party too much, that's a problem that goes beyond Hamilton. The rumours, the Superbowl incident, Bouma buyout, poor performances, there's a lot of smoke that has nothing to do with Hamilton.
I'm just saying that I would be piss too if I had a bad yearly report at my office because all my coworkers are coming into work hungover and ####ed up from partying the night before.
'Flawed' players whom I would take on the team in an instant :
Dougie Hamilton (problem : isn't a 'bro'. Weird like a goalie, but not a goalie.)
PK Subban (problem : becomes angry at teammates who float.)
Josh Ho-Sang (problem : becomes angry at organization, coach, GM and calls them out.)
Patrik Laine (problem : incapable of lying. History of pouting.)
The first two I actually don't care about at all, or see as strengths. The last two are just a product of youth, and guidance. If this is negatively effecting their value... good, snap them up.
Dougie in particular has become a better player and more mature every year. PK would be great on a team that needs a vocal person to call out GAF levels. Ho-Sang is going to be a great read in the Athletic if no one gives him an actual shot, he needs out of the Isle. Laine is hilarious.

I honestly didn't know that about PK. Honest question though, can a team leader be a guy who might be scratched on any given night? Not trying to be sassy and I haven't had an opinion on Subban throughout the years but it certainly seems like his value on an NHL lineup should be questioned in 2021

Subban is a gym rat like Gio, but unlike Gio he also loves the spotlight. And he never stops talking, so anything that enters his head leaves through his mouth. He has had run ins with teammates because of it. It's not because he says a disrespectful thing so much as an embarrassing thing for other players to hear.
A team that already has Gio/Tkachuk/Monahan/Andersson/Lucic/Ryan shouldn't have much of a problem with Subban. It's teams that have a bunch of prima donnas where Subban has run ins. Problems in Montreal/no problems in Nashville/ potential problems in NJ.

This is the last ranking of Craig Button, just before the trade deadline this year. There are other lists, but Buttons always seem to coincide most closely with the direction Calgary goes.
I highlighted the players that have come up in discussion, and left out the Western Conference, the Ottawa Senators and players whom the other team has highlighted as being an integral part of their future. Dallas and Minnesota are the only teams that I can think of that might be a trading partner in the west, so they are interesting to look at.
The thing about NHL affiliated prospects is that they are farther along in their development, and more of a 'sure thing'.
Note that Valimaki is considered graduated, and no Flames appear on the list, while notably the Kings and Coyotes have some top end talent on the way in the division. If Gaudreau is dealt, this is a target guide.

Someone had the idea of targeting Vrana and McMichael from Washington.
Something like Gaudreau and Kylington for Vrana and McMichael?
Seems like a stretch though with Vrana kind of breaking out last season, but Gaudreau at his worst was still better than Vrana at his best (so far) so I don't know.

McMicheal would be my #1 target, and might be available because of Kuznetsov and Backstrom both signed to big money (MNTC) contracts extending another five years. He is essentially blocked.
Adding Gaudreau would also push Vrana down to the third line, and stunt his growth and ice time.
I could see Washington going all in for a couple of years of :
Ovechkin - Kuznetsov - Wilson
Gaudreau - Backstrom - Oshie
that is honestly terrifying. Calgary might have to add a Kylington plus a mid-pick, but honestly I think it's a win-win for both teams.
Plus, as someone else pointed out, Connor McDavid vs. Connor McMicheal.

I don't see Washington trading McMichael or Vrana. Vrana needs more ice time, and he'll get that in Washington when more of the aging players begin to regress.

Not great decision making by Dougie but sounds like Treliving needs better communication lines between the front office and the players. Important to maintain positive relationships with the guys and take their feedback on the state of things as well. The results over the last few years speak for themselves. I see a skilled team that at the end of the day doesn't really want to go to battle for the coaches. Obviously there were issues with Hartley and again with Peters. Sounds like Tre needs to be a little more in touch with his players concerns. His Peters hiring was poor and whether they keep Ward or go elsewhere, the next decision had better be an improvement on the last one.
The players have by all accounts come out and said that its a tight knit group in terms of the players, but you don't hear glowing remarks about the relationships with the coaches. Hope the GM isn't tuning those things out. Johnny trying to tell the coach he's got to take a time out to no avail was a little concerning.

If they feel that they want to keep Vrana as a seventh forward in their top six, totally understandable. Personally, I would do McMicheal and a small sweetener straight for Gaudreau, but I see McMicheal as a potential top line player.

If the Flames sign Hall, then trade Gaudreau for cap space/futures because he's an eventual flight risk, then as nice as it would be to have Vrana, it's not necessary.
Gaudreau for McMichael and the Caps 2020 1st seems like a pretty fair deal. On paper it's Gaudreau for two late 1sts, but McMichael's stock really went up in the last year.

An intelligent, all-around centre who broke out for 2019-2020 in such a way that he looks to be a top-line NHL talent. His shot and vision has hit another level since he was drafted.
2018-2019 London Knights OHL 67 36 36 72 19 |
2019-2020 London Knights OHL 52 47 55 102 26 |

Canada U20 WJC-20 7 5 2 7 0
He's a play driver, and can make things happen out of nothing. Everything that I've heard about him reads kind of like Monahan, only a year ago they were calling him a strong 2way player instead of a point getter. Average speed, not gritty but goes to the dirty areas, and makes smart plays.
I can deal with a defensively sound Monahan clone.

I mentioned it in the Draft thread, but what do people generally think of a trade with Montreal? Cole Caufield is Johnny sized, but with trading places I don't think that would matter. It would make a mighty mouse pair of him and Phillips on the right side, short but with a low centre of gravity. The other player that I really like is Joni Ikonen, who is playing in Liiga Finland, and looks like people are sleeping on his value because he is an unassuming Langkow type of player.
The crux of it is that Montreal has three second round picks. And this years draft appears to be strong and all over the place picks 20 to 60. Calgary has the best scouting staff in their history right now, and I think that this could be a big opportunity.
I think that this is sellable to the Habs and their fans, but I'm curious as to what Flames fans think. This would also put Montreal in a position where they can sell Drouin.
Johnny Gaudreau + Marc Jankowski for Cole Caufield + Joni Ikonen + 3 seconds.
