Calgary Flames All Time Roster - #2 Center

[Bingo]

So some details ...

1. Calgary players only
2. I'll look at games played, production and PPG to list options.
3. My cut off won't effect options as I'll go deeper than required
4. I'll label them by rank (3rd line LW) but don't select the player that matches that role the best, pick the best player.

Day to Day

We elect a position, say 2nd line RW, remove that name and do the 3rd line RW the next day.

I'll post a summary as we go along.

I say Nilsson over Gilmour but it's partially just so Gilmour is centering Tkachuk on the nastiest third line of all time. Best player status between them is certainly debateable

Went with Nilsson but really wanted to vote for Otto.

Won't be voting for Gilmour. Great hockey player though.

Also went with Nilsson, but see Gilmour is quite ahead. And, I get that. 4th line center should be interesting. My first thought was Otto, but I'm starting to think about Backlund who I think should get some credit. Obviously Monahan will be in that conversation as well. Fun.

Does Conroy get any consideration as the 4th line centre? He was a very strong defensive centre, but also produced offensively. Could certainly perform in a 4th line checking role, while giving you more pop than a guy like Otto.

I think Sean Monahan gets criminally underrated.

Doug Gilmour: 266GP, 81G, 214A, 295P
Sean Monahan: 541GP, 194G, 411P

In Gilmour's best season as a Flame he had 91 points while the team scored 348 goals (in on 26.15% of the goals)

In Monahan's best season he had 82 points while the team scored 289 goals (in on 28.37% of the goals)

Gilmour is thought of as the better Flame because of the era and the absolutely stacked team he played on.

Sean Monahan as a Flame > Doug Gilmour as a Flame.

I agree with the Monahan under-rated (or under appreciated part) I see that . his long tenure means he deserves a close look


I'm not sure that analysis tells the whole story though. To me the arrival of Gilmour in 89 was transformative to the team , and not just in points. He was a productive scorer but so much more. +/- is sort of a gross stat I agree but sometimes its what we have to deal with- he was +45 that year, and his team did a lot of the heavy lifting in addition to the offensive production. Now mind you last year (regular season) Monahan was centering the top line on what was one of the leagues best teams - arguably that was one of the leagues better lines- but Gilmour' s line (in my recollection) was almost more likely the 3M line in terms of the match ups it would take on, allowing Monahan's line to take on a different type of role (as Nieuwendyk's line for example)

Nilsson spent a lot of time playing right wing for the Flames after Badger Bob arrived on the scene.

Went with Nilsson even though I think of him more as a W. I voted that way because I just conceived of the 2nd line C as more offensive than 2 way. And you just can't argue talent wise.

I have a tough time voting for Nilsson because the team decided one day they were going to trade him and even without any immediate return, they would be a better team without him being on it. "Addition by subtraction" was the phrase they used.

The Flames never missed a beat without him.

Easy choice for Gilmour.

Kind of sad the two obviously best Flames centres were the #1 and #2 on the Cup team and in the 25 years since they were traded Calgary has yet to find another centre of their caliber.
