I really don't understand the logic that you could take gravel from the city alley and use it on your property.

If you had to patch your lawn, do you just fire up the sod cutter and hit the city park?

Strangers: Just talk to your neighbour, man! We've lost the art of conversation!

The actual neighbour in every one of these scenarios: Thanks, now #### off before I murder your pets, burn down your house, and piss on the ashes

No kidding, if the people in these stories were reasonable human beings they wouldn't be doing whatever dumb #### they are in the first place. Most of the time having a "convo" with them just makes things worse.

Never hurts to try and have the conversation, if you can keep a level head. In my case, I knew I was dealing with a jackass with no moral compass, after a brief interaction, so I cut my losses.

I do however have a good memory, and won't give this guy the time of day going forward. I talk to all my neighbors, so I hope this guy is happy being labeled "gravel bandit" for the sake of ~$50 worth of rock.

I’ve been pondering getting some for that purpose but my neighbour seems like the kind of freak that would enjoy that sort of thing.

Yea, normally if there is an issue you or someone can call 311. It’s not personal, it’s a matter of civic duty and could also impact real estate value. On top of that, your paying for a third party to manage common or public areas, let them do their job.

He's probably really upset to be labeled gravel bandit and have his neighbour no longer talking to him anymore.

Yesterday he was more obnoxiously parked further into the alley to the point my GF couldnt get by to get in our garage, she asked if he could move his truck for a second so she could get by and he said "if you cant get by youre a effing idiot" she told him he cant block the alley and he went on to threaten to shut her up and kill our dogs. Really nice guy.

So my question is im pretty sure this is a bylaw violation, i dont want to deal with this guy as he seems unstable and possibly insane so is this a 311 situation? Will they deal with this? Im also a little worried about the backlash due to threatening both my girlfriend and dogs but i have no proof of that being said as it wasnt on video but should i also be contacting the police?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Im not much for conflict but I feel this really crossed a line. I want to confront him and get it on video in case it does escalate, is this a bad idea?

I would have just phoned the cops.

Now I feel shame. A few years ago a critter dig a hole under my front step and I wanted to fill it in. I went to the back alley and collected a pail of gravel from the edge of the alley where it overflowed onto the road and sidewalk. I kind of thought I was helping keep the road clean at the time, regardless of that, it wasn’t my gravel to take (steal). I wonder if the neighbours call me the “gravel bandit”.

From other yard work, I now have a couple of pails of clay gravel mix, if anyone needs clay.

Call CPS non-emergency and make a report. Had a neighbor threaten to kill my dog (his dog was off leash in my yard repeatedly so my dog put the run on it). Called CPS and made a report simply to establish that the threat was made and in the event one of my dogs was to be harmed they would have something to act on.

Thanks for this, I honestly dont know what this guys capable of so as other posters have suggested, confronting him doesnt seem like a good idea. I think ill give it some time and if he continues to block the alley ill call parking authority/311 as fuzz suggested. I honestly am afraid of this guy throwing rat poison or something in my backyard, seems like the type who wouldnt hesitate to do something malicious. I couldnt believe the things he said to my GF, took everything in me to not storm over there but she also told me it was a bad idea haha

Does he clean it up afterward or leave it for you to deal with?

Dogs are weird. My dog absolutely refuses to pee or poop on the patch of grass in front of my condo building. I have to take her to the next building over so she can do her business. I assume it's some biological instinct where animals don't want to s*** where they live. I always pick up after her, though.

You're wasting your time. Sure bylaw will get to it and maybe give this guy a warning, but he threatened to kill your dogs. If this is true you call the police non emergency line and they pay this guy a visit and your back alley is cleared immediately.

I prefer to have my neighbors not think of me as a thieving lowlife, just my personal preference I guess.

His actions make it apparent he doesn't care, best just to avoid those types, very much mutually beneficial. I'm not wasting CPS, bylaw, or my own time for a small quantity of gravel.

He puts it in my garbage can. 30 yards away from his own.

Question - if a neighbour's dog keeps barking all-day all-night non-stop, can I do anything about it? I talked to the owner and he was like "I can't tell the dog to stop barking, he barks whenever he feels like it..."

You could always ask Iggy for his neighbour’s details.

It's an actual crime to threaten to "shut someone up" while also implying that the method you will do so with is violence, such as killing their dog.

And no, he cannot block your driveway:

Section 27(1)

https://www.calgaryparking.com/parki...bylawsandfines

"No owner or operator of a vehicle shall stop or park or permit the stopping or parking of the vehicle on either side of any alley in front of or within one and one half meters of a driveway or garage entrance entering into the alley."

It also sounds like he's using his residential property for commercial use, which is also likely not allowed. There's obviously some grey areas there as many people keep things they use for work at home. Having a full on storage facility in his backyard for scrap metal or appliances he wants to resell doesn't sound like it fits into the zoning.
