You've started a war when all you had to do is glue the gravel down. Do better next time.

Now you have to live with angry neighbor drama for the rest of the time you live in that house.

Was it worth it in the end?

You could have offered to take him to Burnco or something.

Exactly. A wise person once told me to avoid confrontation with neighbours unless it is absolutely necessary. The drama can go on for years

My father-in-law bought wind chimes to annoy his difficult neighbor.

I'd have grabbed my wheelbarrow and asked if he wanted a hand.

To properly assert dominance you have to make him return the gravel already taken.

Surprised "gravel for sale" isn't on Buy & Sell yet.

You should still call bylaw on that old coot. I'd bet $50 he complains non-stop about Nenshi spending, high taxes, city wastage, blah, blah, blah, and then blatantly steals from the city. Time for him to see what his taxes are paying for.

It seems bylaw is a way for people to avoid talking to their neighbours.
Eh - not sure I really agree. If someone is doing something dumb enough to need to get by-law called, they are usually just a dick and don't care if you go talk to them. Then when by-law is called, they know who did it, putting you in a bad spot.

It's only happened once to me, but I just called by-law straight away and everything was fine - they never knew who called and the issue went away.

Ironic timing. I had some large rundle rock that I have been using to infill in places in my yard over the last year. Started with a 7 cubic yard pile in the alley and filled in the areas between houses etc, and maybe had half a cubic yard left sitting right up against my fence in the alley.

To my surprise I heard shoveling behind my house in the alley yesterday, and by the time I got out there I could see a neighbor had just filled his blue cart with my rock and was rolling it down the alley.

Look, there isn't a lot of value in the half yard of rock, it is the principal that this jackass would just take it without so much as talking to me. So I was a little choked and walked down there to see what he had to say. I asked him why he felt he could take the rocks without so much as asking, and his response, "It was in the alley, it is fair game". I told him that wasn't very neighborly, and he apologized, but continued dumping the rocks out of his blue bin. I left before I said anything I would regret...

I will note that this is a paved alley, the rocks were in a neat pile right up against my fence. If the neighbor approached me and asked if he could take it, he could have filled his boots.

Moral of the story don't be a bad neighbor, I would say this is theft, don't take stuff without asking!

You're nicer than me, Flacker. That's theft. I would have told him to put it back. Now I'm paranoid as I'll be getting some rock dumped in the alley behind my house this week.

Thanks for the heads up, I could use some. The trick to making it legal is to arrive with a "free gravel" sign, put it next to the pile, then take it.

Reminds me of the time a neighbor who decided to fill our empty bin (and I mean completely) with his construction project waste. When I confronted him about it, he gave me the same excuse about the bin being in the alley, so they were free for the public to use.

My next door neighbors are retired, and go away regularly, and don't want to leave their bins out, so they ask if they can put a bag or two in my bin. This is what a good neighbor does, and I am happy to let them do so.

Interesting and topical topic for me,

I have a neighbor who collects junk like old appliances and stuff and hoards it in his backyard, spends all day loading and unloading stuff in the alley and now he thinks he can park back there completely off the property line and leaves just barely enough room for anyone to get by, the only time the truck is moved is when hes off unloading his crap wherever he does this.

Yesterday he was more obnoxiously parked further into the alley to the point my GF couldnt get by to get in our garage, she asked if he could move his truck for a second so she could get by and he said "if you cant get by youre a effing idiot" she told him he cant block the alley and he went on to threaten to shut her up and kill our dogs. Really nice guy.

So my question is im pretty sure this is a bylaw violation, i dont want to deal with this guy as he seems unstable and possibly insane so is this a 311 situation? Will they deal with this? Im also a little worried about the backlash due to threatening both my girlfriend and dogs but i have no proof of that being said as it wasnt on video but should i also be contacting the police?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Im not much for conflict but I feel this really crossed a line. I want to confront him and get it on video in case it does escalate, is this a bad idea?

No kidding. I would have said you can either put it back, or we’ll discuss when CPS arrives.

What in the name of Jebus is wrong with these people?

The guy sounds insane. So ya, I think that is a bad idea. Just call 311, they will advice how to proceed. You may have to call the parking dept.

EDIT, actually, here is the info:
https://www.calgaryparking.com/parki...sandfines#CPI4

The full bylaw:
http://publicaccess.calgary.ca/lldm0...ction=Download
looks like it would be a 3(1)(g) ? - Obstructing Access to Private Property
