Flames Interview with the designer of the "pedestal" jersey

Since there are a lot of people who are passionate about jersey design, I thought I would post this Q&A with the guy who designed the jersey

It's funny that he mentions it wasn't the most popular design. I would agree that for years they were definitely considered a bit of an oddball part of the Flames history, but they have definitely seen a resurgence in popularity in the last few years. I searched long and hard for an Iginla 24, and it's one of my favourite jerseys in my collection. I would love to see it back on the ice as a retro jersey at some point.

I'm glad they made the decision to go away from those socks though. I hated when the Flames eventually went that route for a few years when they introduced the Reebok jerseys.

Some elements of the jersey are okay but the pedestal just didn't work.

Love seeing stories like these. Also, pretty crazy how those jerseys are connected with the Makar family.

Anyway, I've always hated those jerseys. They just represent such bad era in Flames history. Even though they debuted them in 94-95, I've just always associated them with the post Neiuwy/Otto/Roberts era even though they wore them at one point or another. Am I crazy, but didn't the Blues and Ducks also have a similar pedestal style? The Ducks with their first jersey and STL switched it up in 95 as well. Also, the Flaming 'C' in those mockups is still the Flaming C from the Stanley Cup era, right? I feel like the final versions had the C outlined in black. Or are my eyes playing tricks on me?

No, the Blues and Ducks jerseys both had diagonal stripes on the body, but never anything like a pedestal.

It was brutal when it debuted, it is brutal in hindsight, and it's brutal now.

it spoilt one of the all time great jerseys from which we've never truly recovered.

Awful, awful, AWFUL.

I'm embarrassed for anyone wearing one.

Thanks -- I used to be a daily reader of Uni-watch but it's been a few years... great article!

Those "V" socks are horrendous -- but interesting to see the rest of the uniform largely intact. It's also interesting to see the designer specifically refer to it as a "pedestal" -- I bet if the team was better had a lot more success (think 2004 cup run), those uniforms would have been remembered more favorably. As it stands, we were the Young Guns and we sucked, so the uniform sucked as well.

I recently bought both the white and red pedestals. Both authentic. I love them. Used to think they looked silly but I’ve recently taken a strong liking to them.

The white C with the yellow and black outline is still my favourite C they’ve ever used. Much nicer than the black C.

Well, the Flames were one of the few teams with the chevron on the back of socks after the redesign in 2006, I think Tampa (besides the all Star teams, as mentioned) was the other team with that template, and they never connected at the back. The Flames wore those for 2 years and then back to the traditional stripes.

My guess is in 1995 CCM or whoever made the socks didn't have the templates to do that design.

Unquestionably the worst main uniforms in Flames history. A terribly and embarassingly disjointed design on the jersey, simply because a guy liked diagonal lines, and, the needless addition of black. Bill Hay and Ron Bremner needed better optometrists for letting this go through.

Zero playoff series wins in them too.

I know people don't like them, but they're pretty close to perfect to me, maybe the pedestal was a little much. Far and away the best unies they've worn IMO espescially the red:

I'm gald they didn't use the V socks though.

This was Flames uniform when I became a fan. I thought it is giod jersey and was surprised later when I had learned that fans hate them. It never dawned on me that the stripe was meant to be a pedestal. I thought it just a stripe.

Never liked the jersey, I'm not sure which I dislike more the pedestal or current flag jerseys. Both are horrible

So much bad in this picture....

And its certainly not just the jersey. If you could encapsulate an image representing the worst of this team I think you just found it.
