Is it? Are there a lot of examples of something like that happening, let alone working? I am genuinely curious, because I can't think of any off the top of my head.

Isn't that basically what the Oilers tried to do with the Hall trade? Trade away one of your best young players to fill a team need and use the savings to go out and sign a big-name UFA to take his place?

You might say that Lucic was old and washed-up when the Oilers signed him, so it was a bad deal from the beginning... but Lucic was younger when he signed with the Oilers than Hall is now.

Nazem Kadri reveals why he nixed trade between Flames, Maple Leafs

Quote:
“So what happened is they had a deal in place and they wanted me to move my no-trade clause,” Kadri told co-hosts Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek. “But you know, obviously, for me, it was no disrespect to Calgary or the Flames organization. I love their team and I love the direction they’re headed. I just figured that had I declined, I would have had a better opportunity of being a Maple Leaf next year and that’s really what it came down to. I wanted to play for the Leafs next year. I wanted to be a part of that. In declining that trade I had aspirations of being a Leaf and we know clearly that didn’t happen.

Huh? It has been widely reported that Kadri refused to waive his NTC for the Flames. I'm pretty sure that Kadri himself has even confirmed it.

Well Kadri spoke about not waiving his NTC for Calgary. So we know for a fact that he nixed the trade.

I believe it was suggested that Brodie may have also not wanted to go to Toronto, and he has a modified NTC too.

What was Kadri going to say after he was traded to Avalanche?

Looks like the rumour was that Brodie didn't have Toronto on his NTC at the time of the Kadri trade, but that TJ swapped them onto his 8 team list since.

I sure hope the Flames do not sign any thirty something free agents to a long term deal. How often do these pan out? Almost never? Yep. No more Browers or Neais. Sign for the short term or look elsewhere for your talent.

It was Kadri’s wife that mixed the deal. She’s from California and didn’t want to live in Calgary.

At least that is what Jonathan Davis had said during a segment with Pinder earlier this year.

Gaudreau could fetch a ton of great young assets. Young assets don't cost a lot.

Hall is young enough that a long term contract wouldn't be terrible. However I would be worried about his speed and durability as he gets older.

Anyways, it's more about asset management. Something the Flames typically don't do. And of course, the only reason anyone is even discussing this in the first place is that since Hall is from Calgary, it's conceivable that he would sign there.
Okay, trading away Gaudreau after acquiring Hall is the only way getting Hall makes sense. I don't see how having 3 #1 LW's computes when the team is weak at all other positions. So yeah, if the plan is to get Hall and then use Johnny to land a strong, established forward or one or more high-end prospects, then ahhhh… now we're talkin'. (I'm sure there's a GIF of Heath Ledger's Joker saying that)

Weak at all other positions? That's just not true. The biggest gap this team has is another high end winger so that the depth settles correctly throughout the rest of the line-up. You literally say "land a strong, established forward"...Gaudreau is an elite winger - and I don't think physical size/strength is what is lacking from the team, but rather more skill up front. Signing Hall and keeping Gaudreau for one big push is the dream scenario for me.

You know what signing Hall, while not trading Gaudreau would allow us to ice?

Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Mangiapane - Backlund - Tkachuk
Hall - Bennett/? - ?/Bennett
Lucic - Ryan - Dube

Or, make Gaudreau the Kessel.

Hall - Monahan - Lindholm
Mangiapane - Backlund - Tkachuk
Gaudreau - Bennett/? - ?/Bennett
Lucic - Ryan - Dube

That's what depth that can win a Stanley Cup looks like.

Think of PP1:

Gaudreau - Monahan - Tkachuk
Hall - Lindholm/Giordano/Andersson

To me the biggest hole this team has is a top six winger. Mangiapane's emergence doesn't change that - but it does allow us to transform the 3rd line/4th line into effective line.

Here's a dream off-season for me:

To DAL: Noah Hanifin
To CGY: 2020 1st, 2021 2nd, Julius Honka

To CBJ: Mark Jankowski, 2020 2nd round pick, 2020 4th round pick
To CGY: Josh Anderson

Sign two UFAs:
TJ Brodie (6 or 7 years, 4.55M)
Taylor Hall (7 years, $8M)

Sign RFAs:
Josh Anderson (2 years, 3M)
Andrew Mangiapane (1 year, $1.25M)
Oliver Kylington (2 years, $850K)
Julius Honka (2 years, $1M)

You then have $3,210,834 to sign a back-up goalie, a 7th defenceman, and a 13th forward.

I have a feeling that if the Flames sign Hall, this is exactly what will happen.

It'll be one last chance for this core to have a go at it, then we may see big changes.

I don't think there is any chance in hell the Flanes will get Nangispane under contract @ $1.25 m. He's getting paid this summer.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them go on a one-year deal much like Lebanc last summer. Mangiapane is trending well, but really only has 1-1.5 seasons of strong play. I don't see Mangiapane taking a discount on a longer-term deal, and I think Tree would be fine with pushing on a one year deal and then sorting things out after 2020/2021 "big push".

After they nickel-and-dimed Mangiapane last summer I'd be surprised if he accepts anything short of what he's worth this summer.

The place we’re going to save money to make room for Hall is in Brodie and Hamonic walking, and possibly a cheap back up goalie.
