Yes, I'm a bitter guy who has worked thru a lot of these Institutional style projects, and there will be a complete eff up of Design somewhere that leaves them scrambling for money to compensate for that, and chances are it will be scaled back to something that costs less.

If they have half a brain about them....they'll let the design team finish their work, do all of the virtual models by every trade, assess the problems...than begin Construction. They might spend an extra 6 months before they see anything happen at site, but the time at site would easily come down by that amount. Seems like most Construction owners are so antsy about getting shovels in the Ground...but than their site spends so much time with people getting nothing done which is where costs add up.
It might have a lot to do with not doing things in order but doing some things over other things.

This design is stunning. Hopefully we get some more concepts of the arena soon. There were supposed be a lot of details re: that project unveiled this month, no?

I guess I'm in the CP minority opinion, but why is this necessary? Of the big YYC capital projects this one is arguably the most useless and wasteful.

We already have 2 adequate sized convention centers, and this will render the downtown Telus center obsolete while still incurring maintenance costs.

A convention center of this size is not needed. The thinking of "if you build it they will come" is BS. Calgary is not a premier destination for conventions, particularly of large size, and never will be over the life of this expansion. The relevant touristic convention draw is Banff/Rockies etc, and those are well, not in Calgary.

The argument that not doing it will "lose" money from federal/provincial funding is flawed, because it still costs the city 200+ million to build, and this ignores the ongoing maintenance costs. What happens if/when the provincial government pulls their contribution?

Stupid use of capital funds.

Looks to be inspired by the downtown Vancouver conference centre in style / scale.

All it takes is one step in a building like that to realize how massive of a dump BMO and Telus are

I'd like to see some more of what the interior is going to look like.

One thing I'm curious about is will there be some sort of link through the building to connect the C-Train station with the new arena?

Right now, everything is designed to bring people from the C-Train to the Saddledome, but the Saddledome won't be around for long by the time this expansion is set to open (they might overlap for one Stampede).

All of these renderings seem to ignore how this will interact with the new arena, which is going to be a big part of how people will encounter this part of the BMO Centre for most of the year. It's nice that this will look good from the Stampede midway, but for the other 355 days of the year, people are going to be looking at it from the northeast.

To be fair, architects rely on the quantity surveyor/cost estimator to get pricing - architects don't price anything.

what we do is put together the design and the spec package... other consultants do the detail design on their respective scopes, but designing a complicated massing is going to equal a complicated structural package for sure.

Not a fan of the design to be honest... going to be hard to keep a lot of what they are proposing, so it will get value engineered down to a shell of what it was originally.

i'd be interested to see what the interiors look like

I appreciate the face they are being bold and taking risks however...i would be surprised if this massive canopy gets built though...time will tell

As I feared, based on the lack of views from this angle, it looks like they didn't put a lot of effort into the side of the building that will be facing the new arena.

It might be the "back" of the building, but it's the side most people will see most-often and right now it appears to be an afterthought.

Is that really facing the new arena? Isn't that basically looking at where the current Saddledome pedestrian bridge crosses? The new arena will be a long way north of that.

Yes, and the level of detail in the rendering isn’t as high as the other renderings. That side appears to look just fine.

Looks pretty slick from that angle to me. *shrug*

No, the swoopy arm thing over the entrance is where the Saddledome bridge is.

It's hard to tell precisely from the renderings, but I'd say the angle of the image I posted would be from approximately where the big wooden "Stampede Park" sign is right now by the Stampede Administration building north of the Saddledome. The road in the foreground would be Saddledome Rise.

If you look at about 1:48 of the video I posted above, it shows how this fits on the footprint.

It looks like there's an empty block of "something" between the entrance to the BMO Centre and the SW corner of the new arena. In this rendering, it looks like a low-rise condo in that space.

So, with the new arena being a block north of there, the view from the new arena to the new BMO will be even worse than that rendering. You'll see more of the blank grey wall and less of the interesting stuff.

This shows the building elevations...

The new arena will be across the street from the big grey block on the right side of the East Elevation image.

Maybe they can paint some western cartoon imagery on it.

It has worked before! It will work again! Yahoo!!!

Actually, I'd love it if they could somehow salvage the big neon cowboy from the side of the Corral and restore him somewhere at Stampede Park. Also, the concrete hockey players and figure skaters at the Corral entrances.

It recently occured to me that with the Stampede being cancelled, we've all already experienced our final visits to the Corral. Today's announcement confirms that demolition is slated to start in October.

Something modern and epic if it's a large canvas. Have a design competition, and employ local artists to get it done. Please for the love of god, no cowboys, ranches, or stale prairie art. There's some great local talent that can do so much more than simply western cliches.

I wonder if this will inform the design of the new rink (event centre, sorry). No idea how this works, but do architects take cues from the surrounding buildings?
