Good. Charge every one of these cowards and try to break the stranglehold the police have on their own immunity. Now get convictions.

This quote, speaks volumes to that Atlanta video, with those two college kids.

“ If you have 10 bad cops and 1000 good cops but the 1000 good cops don't turn in the 10 bad cops, you have 1010 bad cops.”

Which of those cops spoke up, against the over-use of force?
Were the charges only due to the body cameras?

Atlanta is generally regarded to be pretty progressive when it comes to policing as well.

It was on live TV i believe but all officers were wearing body cams.

I just hope they keep convicting bad people who are police officers and make the bad ones who haven't been caught yet, too scared to continue their ####ty actions. And make prospective idiots who want to power trip as a cop, go into the military instead, where their sociopathic tendencies are possibly better suited.

The #blackouttuesday stuff really comes across as the laziest form of virtue signalling. The sentiment is ok, but it doesn't come across as earnest or productive to me.

The irony of everybody flooding Instagram and Facebook with the same blank posts is that it just makes the targeted advertisements really stand out.

Just now caught up from all the posts over the weekend.

It's been interesting here in Tulsa. We have a long history with all this. Yesterday was the 99th anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre. We have had 2 high profile cop killings in the last few years. So we are a community are pretty primed for a reaction.

Things have gotten tense between protesters and police. There was an incident where protesters shut down the highway and then a dufus drove through the crowd in his truck. There's been tear gas and pepper spray from the police. They shut down the mall yesterday after threats that it would be looted or burnt down. (yes, its open because this is red America and we think Covid is for pussies)

The mayor met with protesters and agreed to changes including not renewing the contract with Live PD which has been a contentious issue for a while now. So the official response is helping. The city police force recently got a new chief who is black so I think that helps ease the tension with the community in hopes that he understands the issues being talked about.

The national guard did show up last night in a limited role to assist police in responding to the protesters. I think so far the ratio of protest to rioting here has been pretty good. Some damage and looting but overall pretty low compared to the number of folks out protesting.

I have long been on my soapbox about police brutality. So none of this is particularly surprising. For those that care, I have a bit of nuance in my take.... It's not that police are racist. It's that police are on a power trip and they come into contact with minorities more than they should so they end up having negative outcomes more often. The reasons that black communities have higher crime rates and more imprisoned folks is for another day. Those are the policies that have a history of racism. And it's why you can see cops of all ethnicities and still have these problems. As long as we deify police in our culture and provide no oversight, this will never change. I really hope some good comes of all of this but I am not optimistic.

I've seen the debates online about reducing funding to police.

Thoughts?

Looking at Calgary's budget online - 14% of the spending goes to Police services (its a higher percentage if you exclude the portion that goes to the province) - by far the highest spending chunk of the budget outside of what the province takes. 1% to social programs, 0.49% for affordable housing.

In principle it is a good idea, but yeah, all I see now is the advertisements. I've seen people say that it is a buy nothing/ sell nothing day, which would be a more impactful concept.

I watched Seth Meyers last night and he talked about the "bad apple" argument and has a good point. Paraphrasing...

If you went to an orchard to pick apples and the farmer told you that there were a few bad apples in there that might kill you, then that is not "just a few bad apples", that is a bad orchard.

I'm a little bit embarrassed for the people I know that abandoned the recommendations of Dr. Hinshaw to go stand too close to a crowd of people yesterday. If you care about the lives of your elders meaning you value all lives the same then you'll ####ing listen.

The Tuesday blackout makes more sense at least. Safe way to make your protest seen.

So they’re on the sidewalk swearing and even taunting, who cares. Some of those cops need to chill out and realize they’re only making things worse. People need to vent a bit. As long as they’re doing it peacefully, let them.

Re: Kansas cops in video a few posts above.
