In my neighborhood, in my city, in my county close to downtown Pittsburgh it is a pretty blue area. Relatively diverse population. But man, the minute you get a little bit past the inner suburbs, it's a wasteland of some of the worst kind of Trump supporters.
So for all that we have arguments and different viewpoints here, I'm glad that at least it seems that we all here can see clearly where police are overstepping their bounds, where they're abusing their authority, and we can all collectively be appalled by it, not lauding it as if protesters deserve to be run down in the streets.

Just saw this advisory from official public safety in Pittsburgh

Semantics. "A terribly misguided decision akin to one that would be made by a POS parent" is maybe better? The other 9-year-olds are home safe. I dunno. I'm not a parent.

Does any culture change come from this? Even if it’s prolonged, what systemic, cultural changes come from this?
This is the same nation that stood silent when a bunch of affluent white kids in Sandy Hook were killed and that couldn’t reform systemic or cultural gun change.
On the verge of another four years of Trump, I’m not holding my breath.

Put it in reverse, and back away slowly. Nobody gets hurt, nothing escalates.

The NYPD seemed to just come out the gate at full volume.

I disagree. Taking your young children out to protest in a time like this? You deserve to have you’re ass kicked.

Not en masse, sure, but I'm saying I'm surprised there haven't been, as far as I know, any instances of a protestor getting killed by a cop, or a or a cop getting killed by a mob of protestors (less likely), or a civilian who doesn't like the protestors getting killed by protestors. The worst we seem to have seen is a guy who tried to shoot an arrow at someone and got beat up, and a couple of people who attempted to drive through a crowd of people at relatively low speed and, thankfully, didn't seriously hurt anyone. I'm sure there have been some injuries, but like I say, this is pretty crazy stuff and it's happening in a number of cities at once. It could still happen, and obviously the property damage is not a good thing, but the lack of fatalities is.

To be fair, there have been people in this thread who have engaged with the ideas of other posters in a highly accusatory, moralistic fashion, essentially saying that they don't care about racism. I don't think you did that at all, I'm just saying, there is a way to call someone racist without actually calling them racist, and yeah, I don't blame people when they get upset at that sort of tone. Again, not you... at least, not this time.

This is short sighted. We would make a great team and you know it. Our differences create “comedic tension.”

Sure, but let's face it, in terms of solving the world's problems I don't think we'd actually get much done. I can see it making for a good comedy set. But I was actually aiming that more at afc's participation; I'd rather be in downtown Atlanta wearing that Bruce Willis billboard from "Die Hard with a Vengeance" right now than live through that.

Chrissy Tiegen is pledging $100000 towards bail costs for the protestors. Maybe she watches CNN.

There were definitely some issues with the Pittsburgh protest as well, mostly vandalism (I posted a video of a white kid destroying a police vehicle while the protesters around him tried to stop him), and the vandalism that ended up on the Lemieux statue outside of PPG Paints Arena matched that which was on a war memorial earlier this week on Memorial Day.
The actual people protesting the police brutality seemed to not be the ones inciting any chaos here.
Also I spent all day today managing phone calls with coworkers and my boss since we're finally reopening this coming week after 2.5 months closed, so I was completely unaware what was happening. I picked up dinner from a restaurant less than a mile from where the worst of the Pittsburgh chaos happened. I saw a single group of about 40 protesters, all calmly walking down the street with signs.
It wasn't until I got home that I realized anything had happened. So it doesn't seem like our event turned out like the others.

There was literally not a single person behind him when he floored it forward.
Edit: and I also have zero interest in arguing about this so I’ll just throw in the towel

I think there are historical examples where it is effective, but the people have become increasingly powerless. It also takes a high level of extremism and organization to take down an established power structure.
