It's weird that some of you are grossed out by pineapple, but not canned mushrooms.

Pineapple on it's own is fine, I just find the flavor does not mesh well on pizza.
Agreed on canned mushrooms, but I think most reputable pizza joints use fresh mushrooms.

It's never irrational. However, some might call these views a bit extreme:

Fresh mushrooms can be problematic - they often come out raw (not cooked long enough). Also, mushrooms are like 90% water and can make the pizza soggy.

Cooked mushrooms are awesome though. I started doing that a couple of months ago with my own pizzas because I heard of someone doing that. You start with a heaping pile of chopped ones in the pan that cooks down a ton, add some wine and thyme or something like that to them. I'll never go back now.

Canned mushrooms are gross. A lot of them come from China and have an allowed maggot content.

Not just mushrooms. A lot of the processed food we eat has allowable limits for disgusting stuff.

I also pretty much stopped drinking milk when I found out that there is an allowable amount of blood and pus allowed in it.

Ha ha, like I mentioned earlier, Hawaiian had a pretty easy route to the third round. Pepperoni mushroom is at least a legit opponent, but I'm confident the power of pineapple will continue to crush the competition. Go Pineapple go!

Mushrooms are amazing. They actually can't be overcooked because of their cell walls. They remain tender even after being cooked for an excessive amount of time.

If I'm making pizza at home and using mushrooms, I will slice them up and saute in garlic butter before putting them on the pizza.

My 2 cents
I like Hawaiian pizza and it's one of my favourites.
For me, pineapple does work as the sweetness balances out the saltiness of the ham (and bacon), and the tartness of the tomato sauce. The crust and mozzarella themselves don't have a lot of their own flavour, but provide the crunch and greasy goodness to the pizza. All in all, adding pineapple rounds out a balance of a good pizza in terms of salt, sweet, crunch, and chew
Pineapple is a traditional partner to ham and pork, and people that like it on their pizza would likely also enjoy pineapple on Chinese Sweet and Sour pork, or as a burger topping. Sweet and Savory also work for such things as teriyaki sauce, salted caramel, and Chicago popcorn mix

You have to fry them first, past the point where the mushrooms drop the water.

When the sauce is a little spicy and tangy, the ham is just crisping up, the cheese is nice golden brown and the pineapple is a bit carmelized but still plump and juicy. Absolutely delicious. I think people who hate hawaiian have never tried a good one, probably some chain pizza with canned pineapple chunks.

Going by the FDA no maggots allowed in canned tomato sauce, however canned tomatoes are allowed 2 maggots per 500 grams. Canned mushrooms are allowed 20 maggots of any size per 100 grams. That's enough maggots to ensure I stick with fresh as much as possible.
