Your original comment seemed unequivocal that Kipper was the singular best. Now I think we are on the same page.

As an aside, I've watched a fair bit of Mike Vernon lately, and he was full value for clutch goaltending. I think Vernon had more ups and downs than Kipper, but he had a very significant positive impact on the franchise in his own right. Arguably as significant as Kiprusoff's.

Vernon’s clutch goaltending post 1989 left a bit to be desired IMO.

In my opinion, not to the same extent. My memory is that Kiprusoff was unreal against Detroit in 2007. He was pretty much the only reason that series went 6. It was some of the best goaltending I've ever seen. 2008 and 2009 are more debatable. Did Vernon ever singlehandedly extend a Flames series after '89? I ask that out of curiosity and a bit of ignorance. My gut tells me no and I am open to being wrong here.

True about 07. He was outstanding and the Flames had no business being in that series.

Kipper played like a god in 07 and was the only reason that series went to game 6 2OT instead of a sweep. In the four losses the Flames were outshot 46-20, 51-15, 38-24 and 55-21. In the two wins they were outshot 30-28 and 35-21. The game 3 performance to keep them in the series and game 6 performance to drag to game deep into OT are particularly memorable.

It was the next two playoffs where Kipper was inconsistent. He was pulled twice in the Sharks series although also stole game 1 and pitched a shut out in an elimination game 6. Then against Chicago he was average for 4 games before falling apart in 5 and 6.

Watched that horrific 1983 Flames/Oilers game three where Gretzky went off for 7 points in a 10-2 spanking.

Why? First time I've seen a classic game on tv from the corral days so it was fun to take that in.

The one shocking thing for me though? Jamie Macoun playing in the game along with Eloranta, Phil Russel, etc.

I had early years ... then build up years ... then cup contending years as distinct timelines, so it's odd to see Macoun arrive earlier than I remembered. I had him coming in with Patterson and Otto, but he preceded them by a full season.

yeah he and Loob both made the all rookie team that year (83-84). was a pretty notable team which also included the ROY Barrasso and a feller named Yzerman

For sure ... I had the 83/84 memory as the year things got serious.

Loob, Quinn, MacInnis were all big additions.

Patterson was a rookie that year too. Otto came the year after.

But Macoun in the playoffs of 82/83 just wasn't in my memory banks.

Dark era in the history between the Flames and greasers.

IIRC there was about a 20 game stretch where the flames won maybe 2 games...and many of the losses were complete blowouts.

Then the team got a few guys as you have mentioned and Bob Johnson changed the focus from being a complete team to a team designed to beat Edmonton. The rest is hostory and since that tie until now, I would guess the Flames have a huge advantage in wins vs losses.

anyways that's an interesting year because you are right you actually see the whispers of the cup team starting there (other than lanny and Pep) with Macoun, MacInnis, Vernon and Hunter all getting their cups of coffee


Cliff was just a marvel of the college guys though eh? every year you would see at least one show up..Beers...Macoun...Patterson..Otto (even Canadian college guys like Hindmarch, Bourgeois)

He didn't have the soul killing series ending misses that Vernon did. IMO if you traded Vernon after 1989 his legacy as a Flame is the same.
