Man, on that game winning goal, there’s a nasty yank down of the Russian player coming back that would have been on Lemieux.

Also Toilet paper on the ice for the last minute.

I remember watching the original series so I watched this with a critical eye. Certainly the best group of forwards ever in an international competition. In terms of defence I thought both teams were short a defensemen or two and Grant Fuhr did not look that good to me.

Very interesting to hear Keenan’s comments about putting out the best offensive players on the final goal scoring shift in game 3: “we had the last change and wanted to take advantage of the Soviet’s use of two inexperienced defencemen”. They showed Kravchuk getting an earful from Victor Tihkinov after the Lemieux goal.

Yes when changing was allowed after an icing.

You know, it's funny--I was just noticing this as well. When did the current rule become the norm? Is that a post lockout rule?

Also, when did every team adapt the player benches on both sides of the ice? I feel like every highlight I've seen from the '89 season has them on the same side, so is it safe to say that is the correct answer? For whatever reason I feel like Winnipeg was the last team to have benches on opposite sides of the ice.

Yep...started 05-06 IIRC.

As for the benches thing...depends entirely on the building. Old ones often had them on opposite sides. anything since the 80's (im guessing) are on the same side.

Yeah, I noticed that Game 1 of the '87 Canada Cup at the Forum, the benches were on opposite sides, but fast forward to the '89 Cup, and the benches at the Forum are on the same side.

Just finished watching game two last night.

Through two games, first ... didn't remember that Sergei Pryakin was on that team, and two that he was a decent player. Such an invisible player in his time in Calgary.

And I can't believe Calgary got Gilmour out of St. Louis a year later, scandal or not.

It must have been mandated for the 1988-89 season. I found some clips from the 1988 playoffs and some arenas still had the benches on opposite sides.

It looks like the last game played with benches on opposite sides of the rink would have been the cancelled Game 4 of the 1988 Final at the Boston Garden.

Later that fall, the Garden had its benches on the same side of the ice.

Yup. Blatant interference. In modern era the goal would have been called back after video review and USSR would go on the powerplay.
