James Neal comes back to NYI!
In a universally acclaimed move on Friday that had fans calling for a lifetime extension in his current role, Islanders GM TheScorpion plucked winger James Neal off waivers from the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Neal, 32, carries a $6.5 million cap-hit for only one more season. After shedding over $60 million in salary over the last month, TheScorpion said he figured adding a tenth of that would be no big deal.
"James Neal is one of the league's top goal-scorers who has never disappointed as far as I can remember," said TheScorpion. "His two total points during our CPHL Islanders' 20-game run to the finals in 2018 were very memorable, and who can forget that time he helped the NHL Flames reach first in the West?"
TheScorpion also pointed to Neal's chemistry with players around him.
"Well, obviously, Connor McDavid benefited tremendously from playing with Neal this season," he said. "If McDavid can be improved by Neal, you better believe Trevor Moore will go up to the top of the mountain."
The Islanders will be looking to Erik Karlsson, Anders Lee, Blake Wheeler, and Neal to lead them to the promised land next season.
"It's gonna be great," said TheScorpion. "And even if it fails, I bet I can get those chumps over in Carolina to retain salary on Lucic."
