That was tough to build out a field.
Some half seasons from Boyd, two years from Smith and then a bunch of single digit gamers played guys.
I included Alan May because at least he was a NHLer!

Jeez. My brain says Smith, but I can't vote for a No Good Oiler.

I get the fact the correct answer is likely Mike Smith, but I am going a different direction
I'm pretty weary of all of the Flames goalies pretty much post-Kipper and the narrative that if they string together 10 games of not playing like complete garbage that 'they are the team's clear MVP...where would they be without them?'
Look, its called average goaltending- most teams get at least that and it includes- yes - some games where the guy steals games for you
Smith was good at first, maybe better than good, and then for a long time he was soul sucking bad. yes he was their best player likely in the 2019 playoffs but talk about a moral victory
Ok Boyd stunk too- there were high hopes for him, but I think folks were just so desperate for good news and he had the expectations of a first rounder put on him- but he wasn't a first rounder- he just had that great world juniors that did him in

Boyd was famous for "he made the team" and that's about it. Mike Smith at least managed to beat Anaheim. That's got to count for something.

Pretty sure it was Boyd. I remember him getting papered down to the AHL, outrage, then he was immediately recalled because they needed to have someone on the roster to put them on IR before he could be recalled.

Wasn't it "did we sign Boyd yet?"
I can't vote fro Smith, he wasn't that good. He cost as many games as he won IMO and I found I was holding my breath for every shot against him. He was average and so was Boyd, but at least Boyd had potential whereas Smith was just old and average. May was one of the best at what he did but wasn't here enough.

Mike Smith broke the Anaheim curse.

Boyd at least gave us a prospect that was fun to keep an eye on for a couple seasons when there wasn't much else in the system, and he won a WJC as Calgary Flames property.
Plus he ended up playing ~200 games as a Flames player which is more than Smith did, and is actually not a bad total for a 3rd round pick. Plus Smith seems to be a real jerk who is also a greasy Oiler now, so that should disqualify him.
So I'm going with Boyd.

Dustin Boyd is one of those names for me in Calgarypuck history that was a lightening rod.
A huge contingent of fans felt Sutter was holding him back and that he favoured veterans and was squandering talent.
The fact that he moved on and didn't find traction felt like closure to me. Sometimes guys aren't in the lineup because they shouldn't be.

Smith - overpaid, cranky and mediocre. Overall a negative contribution.
Boyd - over-hyped but paid fairly. Inconsequential contribution.
Had to vote for Boyd as zero still beats a negative.

Voted for Smith. He did have a really good half season his first year before his injury and a good showing in the playoffs last year.
Boyd was always deemed promising in a time when our prospect cupboards were bare.

Curiosity got the better of me so I checked. Boyd has put up a decent career in the KHL. He is currently playing (Figuratively speaking, since it is pandemic time) for Astana Bartis along with ex-flames legend Corban Knight (who leads the team with 40 points)
Boyd has put up 263 points in 447 games, so not a bad career.

I voted for Alan May because Dustin Boyd wasn't really an NHLer and Mike Smith can eff off.
