Been watching old games especially from the 86 and 89 run. Vernon was an incredible goalie, definitely the best goalie that's ever played for the Flames in a playoff run. He singlehandedly is the difference why the Flames beat the Oilers in 86 and the Canadiens and Canucks in OT during the 89 run. Sadly never appreciated who he was especially when they retired his number. I was wrong proud to see his number 30 up in the rafters retired. Best ever to wear 30

Ok so while an obvious choice, this is a retired number and Vernon is a local legend of sorts (I'm sure many have Mike Vernon stories- hes actually an NHL player that might be equally over-rated and underated)...

Eric Vail would be entitled to a point here that if we look at the franchise as a whole Dan Bouchard actually comes close to having a case here- he was a big part of the early years. but in Calgary, no...

hope he (Bouchard) takes 2nd though- the team above could use him

I honestly feel the 80s run of luck has doomed this franchise for decades since.

Need a big center to slow down Messier ... no problem here is a free Joel Otto.

Need a goaltender to take over the nets? No problem just call that kid up from the farm play him against a touring Russian team and then he'll just take over.

2nd round pick ... Nieuwendyk and 51 goals. 9th round picks turning out.

That is a pretty strong statement. Kipper in '04 was absolutely insane. That series against the Wings was like watching god play net. He had something like 150 minutes straight without a goal against to get the series win, against the Wings of all teams.

No slight to Vernon, but to say he was definitely the best is very debatable.

Different hockey periods Flames werent talented to score and Kipper stood on his head in clutch and grab hockey. Vernon faced his own with the 86 Oilers who talent wise were above and beyond anything during that time. Still I stand he was our best goalie in a playoff run he has a ring to prove it.

I don't care if you took issue with his game or his abilities to be a truly elite goaltender...if this isn't unanimously for Vernon I'll be pissed (Locke's protest vote excluded).

I looked up Sauve a few weeks ago during the great mask debate thread to see if he at least had some decent style.

He did not.

I don’t even like Vernon, but I’m on board here clearly.

Shouldn't have said anything. You just gave Locke the idea for his vote.

Can’t believe we had Phil ******* Sauve backing up Vezina Kipper. What a joke.

I recall in his last game with Calgary he got into a goalie fight in a game against Colorado, and we ended up getting rid of him (and his crappy Sherwood setup) shortly afterwards (in favour of Brian Boucher and his awesome Eagle setup).

It's a travesty that this man isn't in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
