During the Flames' first year in Calgary, Plett had 38 goals and 239 PIM.

38 goals is tied for the 30th-highest single-season goal total in franchise history. 239 PIM is the 16th-highest single-season penalty total in franchise history.

The only other player to put up 30+ goals and 200+ PIM in the same season was Gary Roberts.

Still hoping Joe's number is officially retired eventually he was the Flames best Centre. Nieuwendyk for sure right from his draft year I thought one day his number would be up in the rafters. Then again I thought Fleury would have been retired as well when he played

Real life, embarrassing Willi Plett story from a month ago, or so.

At 64 years old, Willi helps out at his son's landscaping business, Blaydes Landscaping in Marietta, GA.

So, my wife says that a former hockey player is running a backhoe 5 doors down from our house - a former Calgary Flame - Willi Plett. He was there several days, and since we walk our dogs past that house every day, eventually I saw him working there.

This is where it gets embarrassing - but it's kind of funny, so I'm telling you anyway...

I see him standing on their lawn, but somehow I have misconstrued what my wife said, and I'm thinking she said Jim Peplinski. (!!! I know)

So I say, "Jim?"
-long pause-
"Jim Peplinski?"

And Willi turns toward me, with kind of a bewildered look on his face, and says, "No, but I was talking to him a few days ago." "It's Willi. Willi Plett."

So I pawn the mistake off on my wife, and had a short conversation with him - hahaha.

I'd love to hear his version of the story - it's not every day in GA where you get called Jim Peplinski... when you are Willi Plett!

(I wish I had said something like, "1977 Calder Memorial winner Willi Plett?", but what can you do)

Mike Bullard went way downhill when he decided to start a talk show, imo.

I'll always remember him for that time he got strangled by Bubbles and Conky.

Bullard was a great addition to the Flames, and his departure/trade for an even greater addition (Gilmour) should give him some thanks from Flames fans. But my standout memory of Bullard was his slow, painful skate back to the Calgary bench after being speared in the gonadal region by Marty McSorely in the ‘88 playoff debacle against the Oilers. I don’t think there was even a penalty on the play.

The top six forwards should have made them world-beaters, with the actual top line (from memory) mostly consisting of Robert Reichel (who led the team in scoring) between Fleury and Roberts, with Nieuwendyk on the second line between Sergei Makarov and Paul Ranheim. Past that though ... ehhh, kind of a mixed bag... Otto was still a pretty good third-line centre, paired with Ronnie Stern and one of Brent Ashton, Chris Lindberg or Greg Paslawski, and then fourth line was Brian Skrudland, Craig Berube and... whoever.

Defence was pretty frickin' thin though. Past Suter and MacInnis we had—what? Frank Musil, Trent Yawney, Kevin Dahl, Chris Dahlquist and Michel Petit?

And I believe he was rookie of the year in Atlanta

Haha, I remember them bringing a stretcher out for Bullard.....could be wrong, though.

I know the number 25 as Niewy only, so there are a handful of Calgary Flames that I think that way. Don't want to mention the list, because I don't want to take the spotlight off of Joe.

Somewhat unbelievable that from 86 to the mid 90s that this team won one Stanley Cup and played in 2.

Willi Plett was bad-ass.

Since we're killing time, maybe an all-time Flames Badass team after this jersey number thing has run its course..

Obviously my favourite player when I was growing up, probably the reason I’m a Flames fan. Loved the way he played, his attitude, and as others have mentioned, the crazy Dutch name.

I was fortunate to meet him a couple times and he was just a good guy. I remember one time when he was playing for Dallas, I got into Rexall Place by the visitors dressing room to get autographs after a game. At that time the Stars were stacked with Modano and in their heyday. One by one the Dallas players left the dressing room with Subway subs and headed straight on to the bus to catch a flight. A few players stopped to sign an autograph but for the most part they walked by the small group of fans without even acknowledging us.

Nieuwendyk eventually came along and signed autographs for everyone, posed for photos, and made small talk, all while juggling this half eaten sub. It was really funny. In the end I think he ended up dropping it and then had to rush to the bus before they left without him. He was kind of annoyed at that point, but I always remember him taking the time for fans when most of his teammates didn’t even bother saying hi.

What about Flames' toughest number? We could make it a bracket system.
#16(Brian McGrattan/Craig Berube) vs #29(Wade Belak/Deryk Engelland) vs #17(Godard/Simon/Lucic) vs #15(Sandy McCarthy/Shane Churla/Tim Jackman) etc.

Willi Plett was my first Flames jersey. Loved that guy when I was a little punk. But I had to go with Nieuwy on this one.
