Icon56 Jets, Byfuglien mutually agree to terminate contract

After a year's stalemate, big buff is a UFA

If things were "normal", I wouldnt be opposed to Calgary giving him a short term deal and then play him up front on RW with the option of dropping back on D should it be required.

That being said...he may be done playing at all.

Seems like his desire to do what is needed to go through a season long grind has waned.

It happens.

This probably means he wants to come back. Couldn’t he just have retired otherwise or gone on LTIR and collected his salary? Or since he had been suspended by the team, there was no way to backtrack that?

I wouldn't be surprised if we saw Byfuglien back playing in the league in some capacity. This whole situation kind of reminds me of how the Kawhi Leonard situation unfolded in San Antonio.

You do realize he refuses to play forward. I think he's done, he did no rehab and spent the season fishing and hanging out around the city having beers and food (which I am jealous of).

Well, he didn't show up for physicals or do any rehab, therefore he could not get paid. He just doesn't care anymore. He's done.

I'm guessing he currently weighs 310lbs.

The guy seems to pack on the pounds quite easily. He's been off for a while with no end in sight, I'd be surprised if he's not in the best of shape right now. Prime Buff was a force, non-prime Buff......not so much. Like tranny said, perhaps he's just lost the will to play at a high level any more. Put me in the camp that would be shocked to see him return to play at the level he has in the past, if he plays at all.

Imagine hating Winnipeg so much that you'd just give up $14 million to not live there anymore.

Walking away from 14 million.........not many people can/would do that. That's a lot of coin.

It will be interesting to watch over the summer if he has any interest in exploring deals with other teams.

Conversely, it will also be interesting to know if other teams would be willing to commit to him for more than a year, or would he have to start off with a PTO so a potential team could gauge his fitness, desire to continue to play

Not if he was smart with the tens of millions of dollars he already made.

I am sure Brad will be in on him, at least that is what he will plant in the media but we will just miss out on him.

If he didn’t want to be there why did he sign that extension? He could have got that money as a UFA probably more term as well. He could have also made a public trade request.

The Flames might inquire but I don’t think he is walking away from $14M in small market central Canada to take significantly less for a small market western Canada that was only a fraction of points percentage better than the Jets.

If he is going to a crappy team it will be the Hawks imo. I see him going to Vegas if anywhere though

My understanding was he had an injury and went through with a surgery against the Jets wishes.

Saw a comment somewhere that the Jets just lost a defensemen that was on par with Pronger/MacInnis, and to further the point they said the leafs should go all in on getting him. LOVE TORONTO FANS.

The Toronto fast food vendors will be saved. Their income has not been the same since Kessel left.
