I think that given the fact that WWE was able to be deemed an essential service in Florida, the NHL will be able to resume with no fans, with all games in Florida if they grease the right palms.

Attendance would be equivalent to before all this hit the fan so minimal impact in that respect.

L.A. is considering a ban until 2021. If that happens, you can probably put a fork in the NHL in the 2021/2022 season.

I wouldn't put much stock into early predictions like this as it's only April. I have little doubt the 2019/20 NHL and NBA seasons are toast but it's going to be a really hard sell to cancel the 2021 NFL season. We should have a much better idea by June/July.

^^ok but how do you do that? Gather 80k in one place under the circumstances? And if you can’t do it with fans how does it pay? How do the owners make money? The NFL has very lucrative tv deals, but not the NHL, they cannot pay 80 million in salaries with no return.

What I could see is a completion of the 2020 NHL season and playoffs next year without fans, because the players have already been paid.

I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that the current NHL season is done, and best case scenario the 20/21 season starts late (i.e potentially not until the calendar hits 2021). If it happens sooner then all the better, but I'd rather temper expectations since so much is still unknown.

It's funny, athletes always talk about how they wouldn't be here without the fans... it's kind of a cliché talking point ,but we're potentially going to find out how true it actually is.

CTV Calgary news reported at 6 that Treliving said the NHL could resume this summer.

Please don’t - I don’t want some half/baked Cup awarded with an asterisk attached to it forever.

There is likely going to be UFC events in May. We are going to see NHL games this year IMO. They will be weird, with tons of restrictions in place and teams might not play in their home towns but they will exist.

There are really weird and awkward to watch pro wrestling events going on right now. I'm guessing we will get a similar NHL product.

If there is a remote chance they will have to. They need the money. If no fans are at games this league won’t last till the end of next season.

Unless we win, I’ll take it

Pro Sports in general is likely facing widespread contraction in the transition to a new business model.

The trouble is it is so likely multiple players through the course of the season will test positive. As it happens to more important players who then have to isolate and leave their teams for potentially 3-4 weeks (not to mention their team contacts who also probably can’t play without a lot of testing), the validity of the season is going to be questioned. No fans. No typical venues. I don’t know... seems so half-baked. I don’t think it will be recognized as a real season in hindsight and for that reason, unless Covid is under real control, I wouldn’t advocate they play.

The NHL is waiting to see what the NBA does - then they will follow.

NBC reported last night MLB, NBA, and NHL might resume/start. That they might quarantine all athletes at hotels in one spot (think they said MLB and Arizona for example) and play with no fans.

Bettman had a sound bite about ‘pumping in crowd noise to the arena because hockey without crowd noise wasn’t hockey’.

Sounds like they want to resume without crowds. Remains to be seen if they can pull it off or not.

PS. The broadcast also said PGA is resuming without crowds
(Not sure exactly when. This week? Next?). You Can isolate well in golf. Contact sports is another matter

I think if there are several states open within the month it's plausible for the NHL to have non-fan attended games at specific neutral sites.

I do wonder what benefit it is for the NHL. They incur additional travel and logistic costs, and health liabilities, while not getting any gate revenue and not getting more TV/streaming $$$ as those contracts already exist.

Is there opportunity for them to generate additional tv/stream broadcasting channels?? or are they running the risk of having to Lose $ on existing broadcast contracts if season is lost??

Why is it crucial for the league to start up financially? (Likely a dumb question, but I'm curious)

My guess is that if the NHL doesn't play games, they might not be fulfilling their end of the TV contracts? Especially if say...the NBA is playing games but the NHL is not. Networks could use the opportunity to cancel or reduce the deal

The NFL could play in empty stadiums because ticket revenue pales compared to TV revenue. For example the NFL will make over $55 billion in TV revenue alone from a season and to put that into perspective the 2nd most money making league in MLB only grosses $10 billion total in an entire season. The NFL 2020 season will happen one way or another regardless of gathering restrictions. For the NHL especially that depends on gate revenue things will be much more difficult and unlike the NFL they are at the mercy of city/state/province rulings.

Tentatively scheduled for June 11.
