Lidstrom overrated? Jagr? What am I reading here?

Sundin definitely comes to mind. Toews? Maybe, but he's got the resume to back it up.

Cabin fever and / or stir craziness better not be a symptom or we're in trouble.

Jagr was described as a top 10 all time player and Lidstrom as the best defenceman ever in this thread. I think it's fair to say that's overrating them.
Jagr probably wasn't even a top 10 player in the 90s. Would a GM would acquire him for one of Lemieux, Gretzky, Forsberg, Fedorov, Sakic, Yzerman, Lindros in 1990? I really doubt it.

Lidstrom was basically a slightly better Bouwmeester. If he was on any other team I doubt he wins a single Norris. He wasn't actually that great defensively, it's one of the biggest myths in hockey. He wouldn't hit or block shots. Basically relied on positioning, which was often bad, especially in the 90s. He was pretty brilliant offensively I will say, very good vision. But again, he played on an allstar team his entire career. Pronger, Bourque, and probably Stevens were better. Doughty and Karlsson in their prime years were waaay better, but probably wont have as good careers.

Actually surprised these 2 haven’t been mentioned. Matt Duchene and Erik Karlsson.

And from a more historical standpoint. Mike Gartner.

Growing up I had a book on HHOFers. Bernie Federko really stood out as someone who didn’t belong. More recently I feel the same about Guy Carbonneau.

Looking at current players I’ve got Doughty, Toews, Kesler, Laine, Barkov, and half the rosters of the Leafs and Oilers.

I feel Sundin has always been underrated on this board. Probably similar to how Iginla is underrated by other fanbases due to not having any star linemates in his prime.

Recency bias here, but I'll go with PK Subban. I don't hold it against him, it's just that his personality and self-promotion have made him a household name which his on-ice performance has really never justified, especially in recent years.

Yet he's in the top 100 players and for a few years there were people who got paid to talk or write about hockey who were suggesting he was a legitimate alternative to Crosby in the "best player in the world" discussion.

Dude hasn't ever been the best player on his own team.
To me, Toews and Kopitar are very similar players. If you look at their accomplishments, points, etc., there isnt much separating them. However, Kopitar is never held in the same esteem. Toews was elevated to legend status after that WJHC tournament and he has stayed there ever since.

Maybe I'm cynical, but I sincerely feel that if you switched Toews and Kopitar's last names, nationalities, etc., the prevailing view of both players would be very different.

Toews is a great player, but he wins this "award" for me every time, at least in the modern era. Not a criticism of him as a player per se, but there were years where he was deified by Canadian hockey media. And yes, him holding a spot in the top 100 while Malkin is not is silly.

No.

I thought calling Lidstrom over-rated was a bad take. But Mr.Coffee said 'hold my beer'

As for the topic of the thread... Rick Nash and Ray Bourque are good candidates

I don’t know if Mr. Coffee is old enough to have watched (and remembered) but some fans underrate players they didn’t see or if they were too young to appreciate. Orr is top three to five all time, in my opinion, right up with Gretz, Lemieux, and Howe.

The second part of this statement is opinion which I disagree with. The first part is factually incorrect.

Haha Woah woah, hang on now. To clarify, I didn’t say Orr was overrated, I said I didn’t think he is the greatest of all time, which is quite different thank you. I was responding to the one post alluding to Orr.
