In this event I very much doubt the owners would get anything back from the players as the costs are not game related in nature... this would be discretionary from the point of view of the owners... so the wages would actually cost them more than they would in even normal circumstances.
BTW, I'm not saying anyone needs to light a candle at night for the owners, just helping guide the facts of the discussion.
I think the true number that this would cost could be decreased through some triggers based on EI eligibility, and maybe income level (ie. I know of some part timers who make a good full time wage outside of the part time CSEC positions who kind of do it for "fun money"... I'm not sure in the spirit in this event if it would be reasonable to expect remuneration from the Flames). I expect some of these considerations are why the initial stance was somewhat hard line in nature while they went back to the drawing board.
If they put in some triggers like that, and factored in the tax break from the decision to pay out some wages, the amount could become more palatable.
I think it should also be recognized that the minimum wage increase a few years ago was a significant hit to the bottom line of CSEC which was due to government policy. Now they enact their right to abide by the same government policy of leaning on EI to take care of the part time workers and are villified... ultimately even without March games they are paying their workers more in the 19-20 season then they were prior to the minimum wage hike... they are still a good supporter of minimum wage workers no matter how you slice it.
I still stand by an earlier statement that there is likely some behind the scenes analysis that has been going on since their initial statement and don't expect that it was meant to be a stand alone statement, they are just being careful in protecting their rights and spending time to do their due diligence before over promising.
