Did you ever think for a minute that the Jets may have no choice in order to stay a viable business? Hockey teama have massive overhead and huge fixed costs...those dont go away.

The Jets make millions of dollars in profit every year while the value of their organization continues to balloon. They receive millions in tax payer dollars for development, and, are owned by billionaires, some of the richest people in Canada.
Yeah, I think they can pay their ####ing staff.
What a garbage post.

Yeah, those minimum wage workers are really the ones that are going to break the budget compared to the multi-million dollar athletes.

He could cut a $20000 cheque to all of TNSE's employees and it would be recouped before dinner.

This is a pretty basic false dichotomy. Helping these people does not stop them from helping other people.
It's also at this point fairly decisively proven that the idea that you shouldn't help those near you if the money could theoretically be spent elsewhere to help someone even more in need is nonsense in practice. (Help/charity is also generally most effective and least problematic when done within the community.)

Greedy morons.
They're going to be effectively forced to at this point out of the tidal wave of bad PR that's coming their way. But everybody will remember their initial stance when so many other teams were eagerly announcing they were doing the right thing.
This is really embarrassing.

Yup, this is incredibly embarrassing for the Flames. I predict they'll likely cave to public pressure before the end of the day.

Whose only rational reason for investing in the team was to have a franchise to relocate to a more profitable city. Thompson doesn't owe Winnipeg anything.
According to Forbes (dec 2019) the Jets lost 7.7 M on the $420M asset . Murray Edwards made 3.6 M on his $500M asset. There are 10 players on the Flames that made more on hockey than the owner.
Edwards is avoiding paying Calgary and Alberta taxes by relocating to London England.

So Katz is classier, than Murray Edwards, Alvin Libin, Allan Markin, & Jeff McCaig.
OUCH.
I genuinely, couldn't see this kind of lack of stewardship under the Seaman bros, Hotchkiss, Kwong, Scurfield & the like.

You can't lay off athletes with contracts, but you can lay off part time employees.
It isn't fun for these companies to do, but their responsibility is to ensure the long term viability of the business.
Just because the guy is a multi-billionare, that means he should not do what is in the best interests of the corporation long term?
Are you mad that Westjet is having to lay off 50% of their staff to continue to be a viable business?

I’m about to severely contradict myself here.
How is this any different than what other employees may likely go through if people are told to stay home. It cannot be the sole burden of the “evil” employers too bail out things out of their control.
HOWEVER, wow what an out of touch ownership group we have. Unreal. Just took the city through the ringer to bleed out every tax dollar they could with the veiled threat of picking up and moving shop. What a way to win over the city for what is essentially peanuts in the grand scheme of things to this ownership group and the gain they got from bending the city over on the arena. All these people’s salaries must be what? 250k in a month if that. Sign the cheque’s. get the good will and that likely could of made itself back in the good will. Now they’ve just left a bad taste in the citizens of this cities mouths again showing that with them it’s always going to be about the bottom line.
Really wish we could get some fresh blood ownership that actually cares about our city then these out of touch dinosaurs.

This is totally disappointing. And in a season where the team could really use some positive publicity with its fans.
Gross. Has me questioning my ability to cheer for the organization (although I still will cheer for the players). I just cannot find this action acceptable.
