Our house rule is that you can do the phases in any order, but as soon as you lay one out, you can’t change it to a different (harder) one as you continue that round.

This leads to people taking risks to be able to wait to play a harder phase, and sometimes being screwed by someone going all the way out immediately.

We kept a bucket of pennies just for rum oil.(spell check doesn’t believe in rummoli)
When I was a kid huge canasta games were a Christmas tradition.
With the grandkids now we play Uno.

I do like the other suggestions that have been made as I've played a bit of the ones mentioned:

Skip-bo
Phase 10
Hearts
Canasta

Skip-bo! Wow, I haven't played that on years and years.

Lots of people mentioning house rules. What are some popular house rules for card games you all play?

In terms of multiplayer card games, I'm partial to Coup (although I guess that's barely a card game). In terms of 1 on 1, star realms - but actually it's better if you get the app for that, since it does the shuffling for you, unless you just like the feel of cards.

My personal favourite game to play at the pub or something like that is Dutch Blitz. I have the regular and expansion packs. I like that you can play with either or both of them.

I know it's frustrating, but man it's great when you finally win and nobody had "Neigh's" to stop you.

Our favorite game with 4 people is Cross Cribb or we call it Saskatchewan crib for some reason. No board, one team of two is trying to make hands going one direction, the other team tries to make hands going perpendicular, 5 rows of 5 cards, take turns playing one card at a time face up, try to make big hands for your team while trying to screw up the other teams hands. It’s very addicting if you like crib.

Canasta is an old favorite. Wizard is a great game too, can usually find packs of card for that game at Walmart.

Very different. This is a very good game to play with 3-5 people, but is doable with 2 as well.
