Tough look when the organization makes so much of community contribution, including in the process of seeking public funding. But when it really matters, and people become truly vulnerable in a crisis, they don’t step up.

It really is picking up steam now in the media.

... they kind of have to cancel those shifts, don't they? And then people are outraged that they're not paying employees not to work? I agree that it would sure be a nice thing to do, but I'm not sure it should be seen as an obligation.

Of course, there is no legal obligation. That’s why they are doing what they’re doing. But there’s a pretty obvious difference in this circumstance between doing what’s legal, and doing what’s right.

Thank you CorsiHockeyLeauge, for arguing against the position no one was taking.

I'm saying I I don't really think there's a moral obligation either. I think it's something that, if you do it, you should be praised for your altruism, but I don't think declining to pay people to sit at home, as a business, makes you some sort of evil Scrooge-like villain.

Incidentally I guess the Jets are doing the same thing.

The Jets' failure is even less forgivable when you consider that their owner is the richest man in Canada.

Do we really blame Murray Edwards though? Poor guy had to flee Alberta due to draconian NDP taxes. Has he slipped to 1.49 billion?

Do you have any idea how much a latte in Chelsea costs? We have no way of knowing his struggles.

Wtf are you talking about? Jore, literally two posts above mine, lambasted ownership for "cancelling shifts in the middle of a pandemic", which is what I was replying to, and lots of people are suggesting ownership is evil scum for not simply paying arena employees their salaries while the arena is closed and they aren't working.

So please explain how I'm arguing against a position "no one was taking"?

Well theoretically the questions should be easy to answer. "Are you paying your financially vulnerable hourly employees during this crisis that is out of their control and will only hurt their economic situation?" I'd have a tough time answering no to that one. Pretty easy question IMO.

But ownership has put itself in such a brutal position here that there's really no answers they can give to that line of questioning that anybody will like. If they continue to say no, they'll continue looking heinously greedy. If they relent, nobody will forget what their original position was.

So the hard questions are the easy questions to answer?

For me they'd be easy to answer (because I wouldn't have made that decision in the first place) but there are very few easy questions for ownership in this situation... which is what I just said.

Canucks Sports & Entertainment has initiated a program, based on individual need, that will help any part-time employee who requires support to avoid financial hardship during this unexpected employment disruption.
