In addition to oil, any recommendations on what to pick up and when? I have a bit of slush that I can invest while the prices are low. ETFs or blue chips? I'd prefer long term holdings, but also open to short term (thus the ask of opinions on oil)

If asking for tips on a forum is your level of due diligence, you should probably stick to ETFs.

I’m really curious to see how the combination of Covid and the oil issues will impact the market. I anticipate it getting really ugly but who knows

Yup, a few people are going to grow their wealth substantially and a lot are going to loose their nest egg.

I'd hate to be retiring in the next few months.

That's the only silver lining, Trump's supporters are going to take an absolute sh** kicking in the pocketbook

Grow their wealth how?

By shorting or playing the options game?

Or buying ETFs or blue chips on the dips?

Times like this it becomes a fixed game and only the elite get to play

Anyone with cash or credit can play. You pay the same price as a billionaire when you are buying in the stock market, that's the beauty of it.

Seems unlikely.

They probably don't have anything in the stock market and lower oil prices equals lower gasoline prices, which means that they can now go out and get a 15mpg truck and RV/Toy hauler.

Provided that they keep their job at the local Walmart, of course.

Hopefully they've hired a professional to handle things.

I don't see that as a positive, not because I support Trump, but because it seems like hoping for financial devastation for people based on who they support politically is pretty ignorant.

There are assets where you can make money though. Not everything goes down and of course something's make money when things do go down. And yeah, if things are down for say 6 months (just to make up a timeframe), some people will buy as things are low and get good returns. Others will be too scared and buy when everything is rosy again.

I do my own due diligence too, but I like to get a pulse of what people think too. I'm too careful and risk averse to make a gut reaction buy/sell.

1200 point drop so far. That's a 8% drop so far this morning. What a catastrophe.

I don't like posting charts cause it's still considered voodoo. But it helps to see the big picture. This charts starts in 2009 at the bottom of the financial crisis 11 years ago. On Friday we were still above what would be considered normal for the last decade. Now we're right in the middle of the channel at 275. I suspect we'll fall to the bottom of the channel. We'll probably start seeing some better virus news and then continue to meander up the well established price channel. If we fall out of the channel, below 260 we're likely in for some prolonged suffering.

Trump's core support is predominantly retired white people, their pensions are tanking.

A huge part of the reason this is, and will continue to get worse is because they support an utter incompetent, the US is utterly leaderless right now and that is what is really tanking the market, the quicker he is gone the better.

Public service reminder: don't panic and sell. Your stocks will go up again someday. Maybe in a month, maybe in a year, maybe in 3 years. Don't sell and take a loss due to panic. Don't check your portfolio value.
