Yes they left their car parked next to mine. Yes that makes them morons since they clearly knew they hit my car and likely knew I saw them hit my car.

That’s it. No new details or crazy happenings. Pretty simple.

Its seems crazy that they hit your car and walked away while you watched and didn't do anything.

So you were you in your vehicle when this happened?

I mean even if it was a door ding, that's still hit and run as far as I'm concerned. You do not get to damage someone else's car and just walk away.

Pretty sure the police would not agree.

Door dings aren't considered "hit and runs". Those are rather more specific. Police CAN be involved in a door ding, but it's generally considered property damage and needs to be dealt with civilly. Generally with a door ding, there is no criminal intent, just inattention.

Why didn’t you say something to the other person? If someone hits my car while I’m there, I’m probably not waiting on CalgaryPuck to advise me on next steps.

Actually they can be, I was about to be charged once. this was many years ago so unless things have changed you can.

My cousin borrowed my car to do a beer run and when back he opened the door into a newly painted older car, the owner of the car saw it from his apartment and went out and saw the ding and paint damaged and called the cops, they came to my apartment and said someone was accusing me of causing damage to their car. I go with the cops and sure enough their was gold paint on edge my green door and the door opened on the spot, the cops said they if I can't come to an agreement with the car owner immediately to fix the damage they would have to charge me with hit&run and it would effect my insurance for years. I had to give the guy $200.00 to fix a little dent on a car worth probably only $600.00 or $700.00.

Yes I eventually got the money back from my cousin

This reminds me of my favorite hit and run story. I saw a truck hoping to gun it and run a yellow light on Barlow plow into the back of a taxi who decided to brake hard to stop for the light.

The truck pushed the taxi into the middle of the intersection. The taxi pulls across the intersection and to the side. The truck pulls over behind him. As soon as the taxi driver opens his door the truck takes off.

I'm feeling pretty bad for this guy who got hit, might be hurt because of it, and now can't make a living as his car is in rough shape. Where's a cop when you need one? Right beside it all in the left turn lane. His lights flipped on, and he caught the truck just up the road. Utterly fantastic.

OK I'm still dying to know what exactly happened here. Maybe it's like the plot of Rear Window or something.

We're going to be left hanging aren't we?

Cecil watched someone hit his car, didn’t say anything to them as they walked away, didn’t call the police right then, didn’t wait for the person to return to their car to get their information, didn’t call the police when he got home, called his insurance company without having any information to give them that would help process the claim and then posted on CP asking what to do.

This thread is timely as I too was the victim of a hit and run recently. There’s a several inch wide mark on my rear bumper where I think someone scraped my car with theirs, I’m guessing it was probably in a parking lot. Am I just SOL or do I involve the police and insurance? At this point I think the perpetrator has gotten away scot free.

You’re most likely SOL. As another poster mentioned, anything below $2500 and the cops treat it as a civil matter. Insurance will charge deductible unless you have other party’s insurance. Even if you did, they can just deny it and their insurance is unlikely to pay.

Yeah. You've got nothing. You don't know when or where it happened. The perp got away with it.
