Do you get free trades? I was thinking of the percentage of your investment that may have paid for the trade fee. When I was getting started, I bought a couple of shares from other investors and ‘dripped’ until I had a more sizeable holding. These holdings were then moved to a brokerage. It eliminated the trade fee and built up some decent holdings surprisingly easy. This strategy has its pros/cons like anything else. If you are unfamiliar with this method/interested I can point you to more info.

ETFs are basically free to buy. I think I pay a small ecn fee.
Stocks are like $5 minimum plus the ecn fees.

Slava / anyone else more financially literate than myself:
I have a question.
My partner has money invested with some RBC mutual funds. I have been trying to get her to move them into other financial products as the MER's on these, I find, are quite drastic and have long term effects on total earnings. Anyways I am looking at the mutual funds performance analysis which RBC printed out for my partner which shows the funds yearly returns, is the MER typically built into this percentage or do I take another 2% off that percentage to get the real return?

I think the MER is built into that percentage and what you're seeing is the net return after all fees. Some of those funds charge criminally high fees of 1.5% or more which over time can seriously erode annual returns

Take a look at TD e-series funds. You can buy them on RBC DI as well now. Their fees range from 0.33% to 0.5%.

The moment I heard about the Coronavirus I yanked all my put credit spreads at whatever they were worth and stayed the hell out of selling premium.
I don't think we're at the bottom yet. Hell, I might actually consider buying put options at this point with the way the market is reacting, but volatility is driving prices through the roof.

Tesla was up to $917.42 on Feb 19th. Today, $698.21. One year ago, $314.74.
Low point in the last year was $178.97 last June.
