Friedman on NHL Network Radio right now doubling down on Thornton and the Leafs.
Personally surprised Dallas didn't take a run at him. Though he doesn't circle the zone like Comeau, and you don't want to take that out of your lineup.
/s
Edit - Friedman goes on to talk about Hall, reiterates that if Arizona doesn't keep him he can see Calgary "going hard" after him

reports had us going hard after him via trade, I assume with the intent to retain, so it makes sense that we would target him as a UFA

Pffft, Friedman just riding Eklund’s coat tails who said Hall is signing in Calgary in the summer as soon as he can this summer.

Indeed. It's Eklund's world, we're all just living in it.

The hockey guy from Yahoo Greg Wyshniski (or whatever the hell his last name is) also said on Vancouver radio he thinks the Flames sign Hall this summer (and trade Gaudreau)
In my opinion the Johnny thing is contingent on how the rest of the year goes

If that scenario plays out, don't expect an established star to be part of the package for Gaudreau. Hall and UFA signings on defence will eat up too much of the cap.

Maybe it has to do with being very picky about going to a "contender" and not another playoff team. Sounds like he wants a cup gifted to him with putting in very little work. And then have the gull to complain about it in front of all his team mates that he didn't get his chance to be traded.
I'd want someone who would have came in thrilled and on fire to push a team on through the playoffs.

I think the UFA signings on defense could be cap-neutral with five guys heading to free agency. I wouldn't expect a star player in return, but definitely think a cost controlled top six player would be coming back.

If (and IMO that is a very big if) Gaudreau is moved, I see a team like Buffalo pushing hard for him. Perhaps someone like Sam Reinhart could be apart of a return.

If they've signed Hall, I don't think they need an established star coming back. I think the Flames would look for something like (1) a young, cost-controlled roster player with upside (like a Conor Garland or something) (2) a top prospect; and (3) a first round pick.

Hall is not a replacement for JG. You still have to knock it out of the park if you trade Johnny. Who will generate offence and carry the puck in?

No chance. Even the Leafs would have a 100% better chance. I have ribbed him over the years about signing with the Flames so he could play for a real team lol. His responses were not exactly PG responses to that idea. I guess it could be a friendly F you type reply you give buddies when they are hackin on you about something but given his love for SJ I think he is speaking from the heart with the things he has said about the Flames.

Lighten up, it's a joke. Besides, you are better than everyone if you're friends with a celebrity. Everyone knows that.

This x1000. I would love Hall on the Flames, but not at the expense of Gaudreau. It's lateral at best, and I personally think a backwards step. Also, if I'm Hall, I'd probably sign in Calgary only if they kept Gaudreau. It's two years of a pretty stacked forward group to go for it if Hall signs here in the offseason.

Hall is really a 25 goal 45 assist type of guy and Monahan needs a winger that can set him up so I don't see that being a big issue. There will be a drop off as Gaudreau is more talented but it's a swap that has to be done as Gaudreau won't re-sign in Calgary and they can't afford to lose him for little return.

The asset management win is hard to ignore though.
If Gaudreau leaves Calgary in two years for nothing, then signing Hall and getting some young pieces for Gaudreau is a pretty big window extending win for the Flames ... and that's not anti-Gaudreau.
I don't like signing seven year 8 figure deals for anyone, but at least if the asset is free, and it creates another big asset being traded for a haul of futures you push the franchise forward.

Tell Joe his beard is gross.
I suspect Friedman is going off of Joe being born in London and that he played for Barrie and the Sault. IMO birthplace gets less and less important the older a guy is and the more he's lived away from home and what he's done ion life. His wife is Swiss, he's become a US citizen. He likely wants to retire to SJ.
I'm betting he looks at TB, Boston or the like (though not sure how he feels about Boston because of the trade). Maybe Vegas for a year for fun.

Yeah, Hall is a puck carrier - just a different kind than JG. Hall is McDavid lite. I actually think Halls game is more suited to the way the NHL is evolving.
I also think Dube has a lot of Gaudreau's game in him - he is shifty, a good puckhandler, etc. Of course he hasn't found the production yet, though if he got put up into the top 6 and was passing to Monahan or Lindholm or Tkachuk I bet he'd pop a bit. His 32 points (pro rated to 82 games) playing with Looch and Ryan probably jumps to 45-50 just by playing with offensive players. Plus Dube is way better defensively, doesn't mind hitting and is a bit of a beast on the forecheck. He likes to cut to the net, too which is not exactly a JG speciality.
