It seems very bizarre to punish bennett this way when he has outplayed Ryan last game and has been really good the last 9 games...
But I mean what else do we expect at this point.
I hope for his sake he gets traded this offseason to a team where he can thrive, as opposed to us just burying him so we can one day say "see, he didn't turn out to be anything"
Why would the Flames be punishing him or bury him? Why would it be a good outcome to say "see he didn't turn out to be anything".
It's completely illogical.
They are constructing the lines on the basis of who they think gives them the best chance at winning.

I was more trying to say that the flames as an organization would rather Sam Bennett becomes nothing in our organization than move him elsewhere and see him flourish on a team where he is given opportunity in the top 6 (or now even top 9)
If his play over the past 9 games doesn't earn him the chance to stay on the third line then I don't know what he needs to do to earn it.

But if he can continue that play on the 4th line that is even better. Role 4 lines that can contribute and we are really rolling!
5V5 goal differentials by line:
Lucic-Bennett-Dube: -2
Lucic-Ryan-Dube: +8
I think is the reason.
While true and factual I think the comparison is better served with expected metrics. If a trio is stoned repeatedly or has had subpar goaltending when on the ice you may miss a better combination.
In this case though it still holds.
Ryan version - 269 minutes xGF% 50.81%
Bennett version - 37 minutes xGF% 50.68%
Pretty tight, but the Ryan version with the edge.
The big difference then, as expected is puck luck with the Ryan version posting 1.05 PDO compared to the Bennett version 0.925. That's a huge discrepancy.
Bennett version has had terrible goaltending at .783 save percentage when together.
All this says is that they have two options, and Bennett has done quite well at center. If they think Ryan would be better anchoring his own line at center on the fourth it's a pretty good option.

He needs to continue to play the exact same way he has over the last 9 games consistently regardless of who he plays with. Be a professional, do the job you are getting paid $2.55 million to do.

Ryan had just returned from days off with the flu. It's not a surprise that he wasn't at his best in his first game back.

There are a lot of peculiar narratives about the team on this site, but the idea that the Flames are intentionally suppressing Bennett's skill and potential really is among the most ludicrous.

Backlund was absolutely horrendous at right wing for the majority of the season. He didn't mesh with the players he was with, so they moved him back to center with two different players and he has been lights out.
They need to move him back to his original wing, to do the 5.35M dollar job he is there to do. Be a professional.
That's how you win hockey games. Put all of the centers on wings and have them play with people they don't mesh with in terms of style of play. Hockey is more about forcing things to prove coach awesomeness, as opposed to the entertainment of the fans.
I think that Crosby and Malkin would be great wingers, to someone like Bjudstad. That needs to happen, so that Sullivan can flex.
Sorry Since1984, I'm not trying to take these frustrations out on you, it's just that you were the last to post!

This reminds me of when Bill Peters put Eric Staal on the wing and everyone thought Staal was done as a top 6 forward.
Then he goes to Minnesota and pots 40 goals as a center.

Ryan had the flu last game. And he has been really good for the better part of two seasons now. Does he get "punished" for that?

Intentionally? Of course not. But they wouldn't be the first team to overvalue the wrong players and undervalue the right ones. Look back to the Vegas expansion draft and plenty of teams would probably have liked a do-over with the likes of William Karlsson, Jonathan Marchessault, Shea Theodore, Colin Miller, Nate Schmidt, Rielly Smith, and Erik Haula. Well, I suppose the Capitals might look at their Stanley Cup and begrudgingly accept losing Schmidt, but not every team protected all the right players.
Role is a huge aspect of perception and even opportunity to advance in this league. So I am not ashamed of my opinion that that the team hasn't ever truly set the player up to succeed. I want the player to succeed because I think he legitimately can help my team succeed. Appeals to the authority of some unsuccessful coaching staffs mean little to me.
