2021 Defense for the Flames
Giordano -
Hanifin - Andersson
Valimaki - Yelesin
Kylington
There is nothing not to like about the situation other than Kylington potentially sitting. Just an RD to play with Gio is needed, of which I would specifically target Demelo.
I would be happy to let every single one of the Flames UFAs walk in the off season. Opens up a lot of interesting possibilities.

Still thinking about the Flames 'scoring issues'. I don't want to say that they are resolved but since the Allstar break the Flames are averaging 4 goals per game. All the same they are 6-6-1 in that 13 game stretch.

This. Forbort could be a cheaper/younger Hamonic, Gustaffson could become a lynchpin on the power play and a #3/4 dman. Gives Tre a lot of known quantities for defencemen come July 1st rather than having to rely solely on professional scouting. Hamonic can walk now for all I care but I’d really like to re-sign Brodie as long as it’s a reasonable contract.

I actually don't mind what happened. They didn't raid the cupboards to "go for it", which with this team, has proven they don't have much grit to do so.
However they had some good D depth and some size something we can always do with improving. And if along the way it helps team defense and the keepers out, that's a bonus.
And we still have our pics and ability to retool if needed in the off season.

Four hours later I'm getting amped up for Forbort to kick butt and take names and for Gustafsson to score on some one-Ts from the point.
GFG! Excited to watch these guys tomorrow!

And it might end up being a curse in disguise. We know this team isn't contending for Cup nor making any noise in the playoffs this season, so we should have sold off UFA assets.
But having Backlund (11 pts?) and Mangiapane (10pts) in February while we only won 5 of a supposedly easy stretch of 10 games against mostly bottom-feeders except VAN & BOS. We should have picked up 7 or 8 Ws there.

Chances are high that when playing without your #1 and #3/4 defenseman for an extended period of time, the wins are not there.
The Flames seem to be scoring again, and the expectation is that with a substantially improved defense moving forward the final 20 games will look a lot different from the last ten.

I'm glad they are taking it slow with Kylington. He has a lot of potential but I still see a dman who makes mistakes and then seems to grip his stick too tight and this leads to more mistakes.
We could be the Oilers and throw him to the wolves every single game but I like the way they are deploying him so he can gain confidence in his game.

Taking bets on what numbers the new guys will wear.
Gustafsson wore 56 in Chicago, which is available here, but does he switch to Davidson's old number 6?
As for Forbort, his number 24 is taken by Hamonic, but his old AHL number 3 is free.

He got that from here, the poster a few days ago saying we should have paid $3 for milk (Toffoli) cause that’s the price for milk (top 6) instead of letting Vancouver do it.

This is no different than going to the cashier and trying to pay $2 for a jug of milk when it costs $3. The cashier will tell you to pound sand and someone else will just buy the product because the market agrees that a jug of milk should cost $3. Doesn't make you any smarter because you think it should cost $2... just means you will have no milk in your house.

· There is no way the Flames let all five UFA defensemen walk on July 1 without contracts.

I hope you’re right about Forbort being a huge upgrade on that. Let’s check back in 10 games or so but if he is, that’s a huge plus for the team.
I also think it’s entirely possible all 5 UFA defensemen walk. That may not be all bad, as it would be preferable to another Stone type contract. They are UFA after all, so no reason to prioritize signing them over any other UFA unless they’re giving you a discount for some reason.

I don't hate the deals made today. Gustaffson is very intriquing on what the team thinks they have and what they do in the offseason.
If it ends up where the Flames only bring back Forbort out of their crop of pending UFAs, and the Flames don't make the conference final, I have to consider it a miss.
The flames are likelier to make the dance than they are to miss so I don't mind attempting to bolster the team between now and then. In many ways, they have already set this course in the last offseason with their signings and lack of moves, so what's another couple of picks at this point?
This is basically it though in my mind. This is the last kick at the can with this group. All you have to do is look around the league at who is rebuilding and who is treading water to understand what group this franchise NEEDS to be in if this season ends up without a cup.

According to sportsclubstats the win vs Detroit move us up 8 points to 44.6% chance of playoffs. And winning the cup, for this squad, is extremely unlikely.
I agree that this should be the last kick at the can for this group as it stands. I think we are going to need big changes this summer. On that note, it will be this summer that shows us whether we have a competent gm or not.

I don't understand how Sportsclubstats or whatever has the Flames at 44% to make the playoffs. That makes zero sense. They're in a playoff spot and have games in hand on basically everybody fighting with them.

Pure coincidence that he mentioned milk. And he never said anything about $2 vs $3. He just talked about different commodities and different needs.

Strength of schedule? Home v away? Though on the latter the Flames defy the expectations.
