Quick cruise through Blackhawks reddit. Seems like they're glad they got something for a pending UFA but pretty mad they weren't able to get more. Feel like we ripped them off big time

One dimensional or not, secondary scoring from the D isn't something we've really had since Wideman. I'm excited to see what he brings here
Last year was the defense's second best season offensively this decade with 45 goals and 198 points including 28 goals from defensemen not named Giordano. That's only bested by 2015-2016 where they got 51 goals and 203 points. Wideman had 2 goals that year.
Secondary scoring from the defense has been an issue this year, but I would say that it's not been a historical issue and that just last year should be regarded as having strong secondary scoring even if it was off the back of unheralded scoring from the likes of Hamonic (7 goals) and Hanifin (5 goals). Compare the 200 points to the Oiler's who have regularly struggled to get 140 points from their defense in recent years. Some years they have struggled to reach 100 points.

Hearing he’s got some defensive gaps, so put him 3rd pairing and 1st line PP, and then out there again in OT and late in come from behind games. Seems find by me.

Must've been reading only what you wanted to read. They're, for the most part, shocked they got anything for him. The majority opinion is that they wish he got moved last season when he was actually having a good offensive season.
"Better to get something than nothing for a player that was overall a liability." A post near the top of their trade thread.
Big one timer with an interesting release I found while watching that. But also confident in sneaking in back door or walking in given an opportunity.
That's all true. I'm just specifically looking forward to someone on the blue line hitting the net without the help of multiple fluke deflections.
He's also at an age where his most productive season might yet be ahead of him. Hopefully they can extend him for a reasonable price tag. It might be a blessing that he's on track for lower totals this year.

I have a hard time believing that he is worse than Seabrook.

The offence is Widemanesque. Wideman had great chemistry with Johnny, so there's that. I presume he can skate faster than Wideman. And won't clobber a linesman.
Dubas wanted a 1st round pick and a prospect for Barrie who seems to be a similar player to Gustafsson which we got for a 3rd only.
Barrie has also never put up 60 points in a season whereas Gustafsson has.
Comparing a player that has cracked 30 points once in 4 NHL seasons to a player that hasn't been below 30 points in 8 seasons is supremely disingenuous. I sincerely hope you're kidding.
I would hesitate to put too much stock into that 60 point season. Nobody seems quite sure how it happened, which suggests he was a beneficiary and not a driver. Very strong chance he never comes close to those numbers ever again.
Perhaps Marc-Andre Bergeron would have been a more accurate comparison. I just figured people here would be more familiar with Babchuk.

Treliving has been on record a couple times this year expressing his concern about the lack of offense from the defensemen. They've tried using any number of options on the powerplay this year, to no avail. Nobody has really figured out how to add offense either 5 on 5 or on the PP.
Going out to get a one-dimensional offensive d-man who can definitely put up points seems like a smart move to try and jump start the powerplay. The powerplay is currently 18th, and that's after some improvements to it's productivity over the last few weeks. For most of the year it was in the mid 20's.
Gustafsson could be the spark that could help them score a lot more on the PP, and possibly go on a strong run to end the year. I think we've been missing a player like this for a while now, and it fills a significant need that nobody else was able to fill in the organization.
