Didn't lose much, gained a little bit. Hard to be mad at today IMO, the deadline is a silly time to make big moves anyways. Its all about rentals, acquiring depth, and picks.
Treliving makes his moves at the draft, and history has shown that. To expect anything else would be crazy.

My guess would be Davidson. Kylington isn't "major", but more than "minor". Middling? Mid-tier? Can't think of any m words.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

I suspect it is Czarnik. One thing management has done is move out players that have been unhappy about their role.

I think it has more to do with the fact that teams like the Ducks and Sharks don't want to trade within the division.

I would consider Kylington major. I think Stone/Reider/Robinson/Davidson might be a more likely scenario.

Yep, for a late pick. Just making space for Hall in July. Nothing to see here.

It's the incoherence of the strategy that's baffling. Unless the thinking is:
"Not good enough to contend, but not bad enough to look to the future."
Which management should probably just stencil above the dressing room doors as the team motto.
|
I think sometimes fans forget that it is a business.
The Flames are probably going to make the playoffs, even though they are not legit contenders. Plus, the west is wide open.
Every single playoff home game is worth significant revenue. And the Flames basically just break even in the regular season, so playoff revenue is the entire icing on the cake.
Then there are the STHs who drop $5 - $20k for a pair of tickets. You can't just ignore them. They have already paid for the seats, and would prefer that the team has an actual chance to win.
So you shore up the D. And let's be clear here, the cost of doing so will have NO NEGATIVE IMPACT on future building whatsoever. The players that the Flames wan to draft this summer, they will draft.
And maybe - just maybe - they might get hot in April and actually do something in the playoffs.
Imagine this scenario: Oilers win the division. Flames finish 4th, and they meet in the 1st round. But Treliving does nothing at the deadline, and the Flames dress Stone and Yelesin on D.
To me, THAT is a fireable offense. But a playoff team shoring up their D without spending significant assets? That seems pretty prudent IMO.

Given the lack of forward moves, I now very much hope we are calling him up.

Flames had to make this third deal in order for the Gustafsson trade to go through. Basically we were over the cap if we took on Gus so they couldn't make it official unless we make this third deal

This. The deadline is just that, a deadline. The disappointment from fans stems from the realization that in a year, the GM wasn’t able to improve the team while failing to get any value for a number of players who appear to be poised to leave the team.
Now the clock will start again after the season is over. Acquiring good players will still be expensive and Flames likely to have a few less assets from which to trade.
I don’t hate the adds today. Hopefully it helps us see some playoff hockey this year.
