Seems pretty obvious that Tippett's defensive system is only for the forwards not named McDavid and Draisatl.

He's created a pretty good two tier system in Edmonton that seems to be working. The way things have gone for them this year, I expect AA to flourish there. He will be under the Tier 1 - Do whatever you like system.

AA wouldn't have worked here. Honestly, Edmonton is probably the only place where he will flourish.

This is true, the two franchises are at different stages of their rebuilds. Oilers are trying to get first place and home ice in the first two rounds (potentially) the Flames are trying to get a wild card spot. People would have been (justifiably) upset at that price for the Flames.

I hope it was Mike Green who said that stuff about Athanasiou

I've watched him plenty and I think the good outweighs the bad, and he fits a real need on this team, speed.

Price is high, but as another poster mentioned the Oilers generally screw up their draft picks anyway. This is Holland handing the keys to someone else to drive him home at the draft instead of Oilering it up.

That being said, can we stop citing Athanasiou's +/- as a reason that this trade sucks? Sean Monahan is a -19 on a team with a solid winning record sitting in a playoff spot. If he were playing for Detroit he'd be a -45 as well.

I suppose. The oilers are in a different predicament though. As others above have stated, they've got Mcdavid, and Draisaitl is showing he's right up there as a top player. When things are clicking, the oilers should be willing to put chips in every year when they are locks to make the playoffs.

Oilers are on pace for 95pts the Flames 81 you talk like they are 10pts apart.

One team blew picks on past trades for longer term pieces but likely too early in their rebuild. The other team is poised to make the playoffs for the second time since 2006 and has 3 recent top 10 picks in their prospect pool not in the NHL.

The Flames and Oilers are in a similar spot in the standings, despite the a Flames having an off year for the most part, and the Oilers best players having a great year, and having mostly unsustainable PP and PK numbers.

I think the biggest difference is that the Oilers have stars who need a supporting cast, the Flames have a supporting cast who need stars.

The Oilers are able to add that support in a deal like this. Jury's out on how AA fits but it makes more sense for Edmonton than it does for Calgary.

Good one! But I think he’s been in game shape for quite a while and they’ve just acquired enough wingers to keep him off the roster until there’s no way they have to give up the 2nd round pick.
