The Oilers are in an entirely different situation than the Flames too. They drafted the best player in the world, and they are now burning his prime years away.
They need to make these kind of moves. Not the kind of move the Flames should make though.
Athanasiou also has marginally better numbers than Gagner, who is shockingly only 30.

The guy scored 30 goals last year, is in his mid 20s and has lightning speed, exactly what the Flames needed.
The Red Wings are the worst team in the NHL this year. He is going to flourish in Edmonton playing along side Mcdavid.

Meh I don't think it's that great of a deal at all for Edmonton. They paid a lot

Good trade for the Oilers. Guy had 30 goal last year and is on a 82 game pace of around 19 goals this year. I suspect he will bounce back and be a 25-30 goal guy over the next couple years.

I don't think this forum would have been happy to pay two 2nd rounds picks for Athanasiou.

By swapping Gagner for AA the Oilers have doubled team goals from 5 to 10, doubled points from 12 to 24 but have almost quintupled the plus/minus from -9 to -45 !

Tre has some major holes to fill. Now really isn't the time to do it.

This team is at best squeaking in. I'm of the sell mindset.
Standing pat is the worse case scenario on all fronts, IMO.

They're going to have to snatch up even more waiver wire and league minimum guys next season to fill out the roster with how much tighter the cap situation got for the summer.

I also wonder if this is the end for Neal in Edmonton. They are likely to move Athanasiou onto the #1 PP unit, without that opportunity Neal is a disaster.
This move could cost the Flames that 3rd round pick.

I can see why the Oilers are making moves with draft picks to make the team better. They have the best player in the world on the team with another elite player carrying the team. Its best to do whatever it takes to ensure McDavid stays happy so as to prevent him from wanting out.

Stellar might be much, but McDavid has been winning games single-handledly with scrubs on his line. Appytoseeyou brings a guy that can not only finish feeds but do so at speed
They're still the Oilers, so they can still ruin this... but this should be very impactful.

I mean, I guess the Oilers might as well, because it's not like they ever draft any actual NHL-quality players outside of the first round anyways.

He can skate fast but anyone who's watched this guy play knows he's a defensive disaster.

Andreas Athanasiou is like McDavid minus the hands, shot, passing, vision, agility, and one-on-one deception: Extremely fast and anonymous the defensive side of centre ice.
That said, his speed will fit well with McDavid and his penalty-drawing ability is a huge bonus with that PP as SuperMatt18 mentioned.
Disgusting price for a natural third liner, though, which as a Flames fan I love.

I guess we will wait and see. Detroit is a mess of a situation. I think his numbers are more of a by product of playing on the worst team. The guy scored 30 last year. This year he has been in and out of the lineup with injury.
The Flames lack of team speed upfront is a real concern and they were exposed last year by Colorado. IMO he would have been a great add and considering his age and his RFA status, I would have given up the ask for it. Its not like you can't recoup 2nd rounders.
