Because he can’t stand him obviously, so other GMs shouldn’t either

In hindsight, last year was probably the year to go all in at the trade deadline. But then, would Stone have really changed the tone of that series? Hard to say.
This year? Limping into the playoffs without a full time head coach while half your stars are struggling. 3 of the defencemen you were hoping to have on the opening roster are injured (Vali, Gio, Hamonic).
Sounds like the perfect time to go get a big fish!

I think being critical of Tree is fair at this stage, and I'm a fan of his. That said, anyone who thinks the Flames should have been in on Pageau or anything like that - yeah, don't agree with that. No rentals.
|
You're simultaneously stating that he should make a move, but also stating that he shouldn't pay the price for a move or get a rental.
So all he has to do is find a team willing to give up a good young roster player for scraps?

No facts from other GMs. Just a feeling

Yup. Don't want to sell the future because frankly, this year sucks. Can't trade expiring contracts because you still need Brodie and Hamonic's injured. So what do you do?

I'm just saying no rentals - there are other deals that can be made that don't involve giving good young roster players for scraps...
I think he's failed to perform at an adequate level for over a year now.

It all started with Valimaki getting hurt. The Flames don't have a lot to work with, and have very specific needs, I am not surprised that things are quite so far.

Sounds like more excuses. Other teams are at least making moves. And yeah, I don’t like him. So what? I’m tired of being a mediocre team, and apart from 89,2004.. that’s all they’ve been.

Somebody call Murray Edwards, I think we found our next GM!
Other teams are making moves, we should too! I don't care if they're good moves, just make some damn moves!

I’m saying that what difference does it make anymore? You tell me what he has done in the past 17 months to improve this team. There is always an excuse with this franchise. Yeah, I don’t wanna pick up an rental. But maybe move a part of the core and pickup a couple pieces and prospects.. something

meh, if they have any ambition to even just make it to the playoffs, they could have coughed up a 4th for namestnikov.
I just don't understand the stand pat approach. If you aren't willing to tinker to provide any kind of jolt, then why not maximize on a guy like Brodie if you don't think this is the year anyways.
Again, in classic Calgary flame fashion, "do anything for the guaranteed x2 home playoff game $$$ baby".

I think for a team that was looking at a lull in their play by late feb last season, providing a massive jolt and message to the team/fans may have had a pretty substantial amount of excitement and hope. Having a feel good with everything going well, and basically upgrading the 7th dman spot on the roster at the deadline, doesn't really sends quite the message to a young team.

To be fair, they've also been a pretty bad team for long stretches during that period.

I definitely believe that's the mandate from ownership, but you can't blame a GM for that. It's his dumb ass bosses

Grabbing Stone for picks and prospects (Vali + 1st) would've satisfied a lot of needs up front that we've been agonizing over ever since. He's been a high impact player for Vegas.

I might be way off base here but I think the present mess in which we find ourselves can be traced back to the Valimaki injury.
EDIT: Acquiring Stone last year would have been a franchise changer IMHO.

Probably true. When you're dominating the regular season it's probably the time to consider buying and I'd agree that it was probably a mistake. (Although the price would probably have hurt - Vali and a 1st at minimum)
Things change quickly and your window isn't always as long as you think it is.
This year? Yuk.

One more time: Vegas had a pretty much guaranteed extension from Stone. Calgary didn't. So Calgary could pay a rental price only. Or I guess they could have bettered Vegas and then seen Stone go to Vegas in the offseason. Great.
