I can absolutely see the Canucks and Oilers having huge setbacks next season. I think this one is misleading and the void of competition has something to do with it. They'd be on the verge if the rest of the league was at the level of the Pacific, but the rest of the league is much more competitive.

a little bit, but at the same time we've accumulated a lot of good prospects so it wouldn't hurt that bad.
players ahead of Madden in the forward prospects (Hoglander, Podkolzin, Lind).
our scouting staff has shown they can find gems wherever pick we choose from (Hoglander 40th pick) Madden (taken late in the 4th round).
as of right now the top 9 is looking preety good
present:
Miller - Pettersson - Boeser
Pearson - Horvat - Toffoli
future (if we re-sign Toffoli)
Miler - Pettersson - Boeser
Pearson - Horvat - Toffoli
Hoglander - Gaudette - Podkolzin
Virtanen - MacEwen - ____
Judd Brackett will find another Tyler Madden in the next draft.

So not gonna really take much value in trusting that donkey move judgment

It's definitely a seller's market.
It's a high price to pay for a rental. It's going to suck if we have to watch Brodie and hamonic walk for nothing, in order to salvage a few playoff games.

Meanwhile this team sits here as stale as they were after the all-star break last year. Tofolli might not have been the guy but it sure would be nice to see some attempt at a change for the better.

As far as rental prices go, it’s not a bad deal in isolation. The only thing that makes it questionable is if the Canucks are in a position to be buyers.
If Madden is a comparable to Emilio Pettersen, then he is probably somewhat of a long shot. Second rounders are also a long shot naturally. Schaller is pretty inconsequential. If the Canucks re-sign Toffoli, I think it will end up being a great deal for them. If they don’t, it is still a decent gamble IMO.

Don't worry. Wayne Simmonds is still available I think.

Because they were bad teams.
Hall is elite.

I've never watched Petersen live so have no opinion on him.
I think both organizations though don't have a tremendously deep prospect base - though Vancouver has a couple that I would probably rank above any in the Flames system (excluding Valimaki perhaps) - in Hoglander and Podkolzin.
This list has Madden as the Canucks 3rd best prospect - so it's a significant piece:
https://thehockeywriters.com/canucks...eason-2019-20/
Not hard to imagine that the Kings may have valued Madden higher than a guy like Pettersen and the asking price from the Flames could easily have been Pelletier.
I like a lot of Vancouver's re-build: Petterson is a superstar in the making, as is Hughes. But i think they've rushed things, and could end up as another team that is missing a couple big pieces to really make a run.

Madden and Pettersen play very different games. I think Madden is a lot more of a sure thing. Pettersen has a higher ceiling.

Too bad, he may have been a great fit here.
I honestly think the Flames target lie on two teams, the Rangers and Devils.

Counting those guys as players is just like when you were counting Hodgson, or Schroeder, or Trymakin, or Shirokov, or Juolevi as future players.
We are talking about a team that is barely scraping into the playoffs here trading a second rounder and one of their better prospects.
It makes sense for teams like Tampa or Pittsburgh. Vancouver should be trying to have a bit of patience.
I'm okay with them handicapping their potential upside though. Carry on.

If Toffoli re-signs, I am okay with this. If he is a rental I do not like this.
Toffoli is only 27, so it's not like he's a few years away from retiring.

Tofolli isnt the only guy that will be dealt by next Monday, even if he ticked a lot of boxes on this club.
Im wondering if this doesnt indicate BT has a much bigger fish in his target.

I think he's in a tough spot.
His position of strength has been eliminated by injuries
The team is in a playoff spot making it tougher to become a seller
He doesn't' have a lot of assets to use in trades.
If indeed it is a bigger fish - I just dearly hope it is with an eye to seasons beyond this one.
I'm increasingly believing it will be a quiet deadline.

Good luck re-signing Toffoli, Gaudette, Virtanen, Tanev, Stecher and Markstrom with 19M in cap space... And even if you did somehow manage that - presumably by giving up even more picks and prospects in order to clear cap space - good luck signing Pettersson and Hughes the following year.

Not without any picks, he won't.
It's going to be pretty funny if they miss the playoffs after this, and then he just walks in the offseason. Just looking at the Canucks' last 7 games, they lost 4 in a row, then beat the Predators and Blackhawks thanks entirely to their goalie stealing those games, and then put the backup in and got soundly whooped by the... Anaheim Ducks. Does that sound like a team that should be buying to make a push for the cup?
