Iconic journalist/author Christie Blatchford dead at age 68

A lot of younger folks wont have a clue who she is unfortunately.

Truly one of the greatest journalists this country ever produced. I have been reading her for virtually my entire life. She did a lot of sports coverage back in the day as well.

RIP Christie.

I didn't always agree with her, but she was never afraid to tell it like it is and stood by her principles; always worth reading.

She was always a great read and very principled in her stands. She should be a guiding light for anyone that wants to be a journalist.

I don't agree with her politics, but I did buy her book about her time in Afghanistan. Certainly she was one of a kind. RIP.

Where is evidence that he is a paid shill? I know that he has been paid to speak for oil & gas at conventions and AGMS (I have attended a couple of his talks - not very good), but I think it is a bit disingenuous to say he is a paid shill.

Rex Murphy has been paid to speak for Oil Sands companies, upwards of an estimated 25 times in the last five years [as of 2014], at a rate as high as $30,000 a pop, all the while using his pulpit at The National and his column at The National Post to beat the drum for the interests of these same companies. The question is, now that everybody knows about this, what will the CBC and the Post do about it?

Murphy's "Climate Change 101," a lecture to students at the University of Calgary, was reportedly organized by an anti-climate change group called "Friends of Science." Postmedia News reported that the group received funding from Talisman Energy.

Critics are calling out the Newfoundlander, alleging a conflict of interest between his role as a freelance pundit for the public broadcaster and his paid speaking gigs before audiences of energy industry bigwigs.


The CBC is backing Murphy but the Vancouver Observer reports the corporation is looking at new rules requiring freelancers like Murphy to disclose their speaking fees.

He is also a shameless climate change denier.

Interesting view from the “other side”. Someone not ready to sing her praises so loudly. As I said I didn’t agree with her politics at all, I read her book and thought it a good read. I certainly see this point.

The resentment (including citing Blatchford's salary) crackles off the page. The part about Blatchford being 'given' a platform is especially risible. Embarking on a career as a woman in the newspaper business in 1975, Blatchford wasn't handed anything. Whatever else anyone may think about her opinions and approaches to stories, she was an extraordinarily hard-working and tenacious journalist.
