Protecting the first - there’s an idea.

Minny sure seemed keen on trading Zucker and now I wonder if the Flames trade was more than Frolik and a 1st. If that was the deal negotiated by Treliving then good on him.

Wonder how Zucker would have played here considering we’re on his no trade list now.

There is a reason Fenton was fired after one year. No wonder Treliving was apparently livid when the deal didn’t go through. I just don’t see it with Zucker but he appears to have a ton of value.

Minnesota was also retaining salary.

I think Tre was livid because it was shaping up to be an absolutely pants down bag on head punch in the face fleecing of an over their head GM who was quickly let go after overseeing the complete destruction if his entire hockey ops department.

For the flames, the opportunity cost was huge.

I thought it was Frolik not willing to waive is modified NTC plus not getting the deal in on time? Am I wrong?

And I think someone may have mentioned Zucker's spouse possibly not wanting to move to Calgary too.

With Addison being a near ready RHD does that make Dumba potentially available? I’d love to kick tires on a Dumba trade honestly, he would look great with Hanifin who also been practicing in the off season with Dumba.

This was what was reported by Ryan Pike before Christmas...

Calgary had a deal agreed upon in principle with the Minnesota Wild just ahead of February’s trade deadline that would have seen them acquire Jason Zucker. However, things got tied up after Treliving signed off on a deal that reportedly would have sent Michael Frolik and a first round pick to Minnesota. In doing some digging on both sides, my understanding is things bogged down once Treliving sent the deal up the food chain. I’m not sure if it was a money issue, an issue with giving up a first rounder, or something else, but it truly was out of his hands.

They were retaining as well?!?!?

It stings to think this teams top 6 would include Zucker and Kadri locked up long term and actually use less cap space than they had in Frolik, Brodie and Jankowski. Kadri I get it that he had his choice. I actually wasn’t that upset Zucker fell through but I didn’t know there was retention.

I really hope some things happen in the next 2 weeks and it is not barely missing on another great piece for this team

Dumba’s name has been out there. I agree he would be a great fit for the team but I am not sure we have the right pieces for the deal.

Apparently not since Guerin took over from Fenton!

How else can they? They've already dealt Granlund, Coyle, Zucker, and Niederreiter.

Suter and Parise have the least movable deals in hockey. I can't see Zuccarello going anywhere not even one year into a five-year deal. Spurgeon just got extended and his expensive contract is up in eight years. Koivu and Galchenyuk both expire after this season and are hardly core players.

The Wild are a strange team in that they don't really have a core to dismantle anymore. The guys they still have are supporting guys locked in for huge term. Really the only core guys I can still see moving are Dumba, Brodin, and Dubnyk. Maybe Staal but he has big trade protection.

To move the long term older expensive guys they need to eat salary, I guess.

At this point I don't even see the point of trading those guys. They don't have a ton of value and I don't think they'll want to leave anyway. Just keep going through the draft and try to build around Kaprizov, Fiala, Kakhonen, etc.

That's a good return for Zucker, but I seriously don't know who the Wild are trying to be.

I'm sure Staal would consider moving to a contender, and at 1 year left for 3.25M I'd bet they get a decent return. They could move Koivu at this deadline.

I'm sure there would be takers for Zuccarello, Dubnyk, Dumba, Brodin, Fiala, Rask, and Donato.

Haven't followed how Hartman, Eriksson Ek, Pateryn or Foligno have been performing. Maybe there would be interest in some of those guys. Maybe not.

That only leaves Suter and Parise.
