It's hard to fathom what's going on here. Even if what someone said that Nurse will sign a long term contract in the summer of 2021, this contract is poor.

Not a shot at Edmonton as I fully believe Tkachuk will do the same and they'd both be stupid not to. This was the same boxed in deal that Brad negotiated, both are a failure and will create major cap hits at best and lost players at worst when they're up.
|
Why would he do that if hes smart?
I think Nurse is going to be shocked as hell if he tests the UFA waters because I dont think any other team is going to offer anything close.
If he wants his gigantic pay day there is likely all of 1 team in the League thats going to give it to him and its the Oilers.

I was hoping it'd be a 7x7 to really screw the Oilers over, but @ $5.6M, it's still overpayment. Nurse is Dion Phaneuf minus the offense that Dion had had early in his career. Guy is a 4th dman at best that gets walked around quite a bit.

The problem is not so much the cap hit (which is still high on a two-year deal), it's the term. $5.6 m was way too much to pay for all of Nurse's RFA years without receiving any UFA years, and it effectively sets him up to make a ridiculous deal in two years—most likely with the stupidest organisation in the League located up North—which will probably make him one of the top-paid defensemen in the NHL.

His agent played this perfectly, ran him on a bridge deal, got him a chunky raise, walks him to UFA status so he can either black mail the Oilers for a massive deal or simply put his name on the market while he's still in his prime.
Nurse and his agent are laughing at the Oilers right now, they have them exactly where Nurse would want him to be.
And this whole, he's buddies with McDavid and Draisatil is going to be great when he rips McDavid's heart out when he says "so long, hit you later"

Where would Nurse fit in with the Flames defense?
What would the Flames need / be willing to give in a hypothetical trade to get Nurse and his 2x 5.6 contract?
There are a limited number of players that play a heavy game and are on the ice for over 20 minutes a game.
Nurse has been paired with Ethan Bear for the whole season... That would be the same as having Gio drag around Kylington for the full year.
Better still try to imagine Hanifin and Kylington as a 20 minute a game pair.
Hanifin is making just shy of 5M a year with the Flames getting 2 UFA years.

well it says here that Ethan Calder Bear would be a bargain at 5M per going forward starting next season.

If by "heavy" you mean "stupid", yeah OK.
Yeah, if Nurse was good like Gio and Bear was near as good as Kylington.
Hanifin's contract including 2 UFA years under $5M is a good thing.

as of 2019 Sean Monahan had career earnings of 30,125,000 and Nurse had 7,235,000.
Is there anyone that would not trade Monahan even up for Nurse today?
How big of a contract will Nurse have to get in 2 years to catch him up to Monahan?

and people rightly mocked the Oiler fan comment on them having 5 Gios.
WTF is holding Kylington back? Andersson's stellar -18 ES play? Of Hanifin's -15 It sure isn't their 15 pts each.
What would Brodie want to stay on with the Flames. Talk about having leverage over the team!!

Is this supposed to be a justification for the contract Edmonton handed over to Nurse?
We have been having these conversations for years now, and you still seem to be completely flummoxed by the very real, tangible difference between RFA and UFA eligibility. The Oilers had the option of letting the year play out, signing Nurse to his QO and going to arbitration, which would probably have yielded a similar deal. The Flames have no such options with Brodie. They either give him what he wants, or let him go.
Brodie's leverage over the Flames is not even comparable to the little bit that Nurse had before yesterday.

His agent is going to have to play his next deal perfectly because frankly, I look at $5.6 as a giant overpayment, Nurse may tempt Free Agency but unless the landscape changes dramatically I dont think there are going to be many if any teams clamoring over each other for his services at that price let alone higher.
Maybe try and use the Free Market to bait the Oilers up a bit, but if he wants the money he wants, as I said before, theres likely only 1 team thats going to give it to him and I'd strongly suggest he take it.
Hes done them 2 favours now with bridge deals and I hope he really takes them to the cleaners on his next contract.
Nurse's ceiling seems like a serviceable #4. He should be getting paid 'Kris Russell' money.

I'm sorry, I must have dozed off and missed when Nurse won the Norris...
He is, at his absolute best, a number 4 d-man. Ethan Bear is a 3rd pair guy. Yes, the Coilers have played him an average of 20 minutes a night but really... did they have a choice? The D in Shelbyville is horrendous. When you have nothing but bad options, you through out a bad option time after time. His ice time shouldn't be used as an indication of anything other than the lack of quality options in Edmonton.
There is no way I would trade Monahan straight up for Nurse, nor would anyone outside of Edmonton. There is no way I would trade RA for him straight up.
As other's have said, Nurse is Dion without the offense which makes him... pretty much crap.

Lol ricardodw what was that... even for you that felt way left field
monahan and nurse are not in the same stratosphere of player.
Nurse and Hanifin are much more comparable.
