Yes. Exactly.
People were losing their minds over it.

Not a shot at Edmonton as I fully believe Tkachuk will do the same and they'd both be stupid not to. This was the same boxed in deal that Brad negotiated, both are a failure and will create major cap hits at best and lost players at worst when they're up.

But if A) the team is still faltering and looking like they won't contend in this build or B) he's shrewd or has shrewd direction and sees it as a no brainer to take a high AAV awarded for year four and negotiate with the whole league a year later (possibly still taking Calgary's deal after putting it through the whole league ringer to elevate it as much as possible), then I believe he'll most likely take the arbitration award and do what's best for him (A full UFA contract and choice of where to play).
|
I may be mistaken, but I believe Tkachuk could start negotiating an extension in the summer after year 2? So it's really a 2 year opportunity delay he has before becoming a UFA. 99% of people lock down the guaranteed $50M+ contract as soon as it is available, rather than waiting and gambling on the possibility of increasing that value by 20-30% and/or have more control over their location in 1-2 years. Tkachuk could be the rare individual to take that gamble, as his father has already achieved generational wealth, he could afford to purchase insurance against the risk of waiting, and he just seems like the kind of guy who might bet on himself (and crave self-determination).
In both cases (Nurse/Tkachuk), the player has tremendous leverage to achieve similar value in an extension as what they'd get on the UFA market, without waiting.
The teams also have the ability to recover some assets by trade if the worst-case scenario becomes likely.

Less funny when other teams pay more than they need to, again, because of the oilers.
They broke the second contract. Seem determined to break more.

Very different players. I would say Andersson is a smarter player with a higher ceiling. He's not there yet though. Right now, Nurse fills his role better than Andersson, which to me is a 2nd pairing physical D.
So yes, no question Nurse is much more physical. But my perception is that Nurse is pretty limited, hockey sense wise. Maybe I'm wrong. Andersson is very mobile (more so than Nurse, I think, particularly in anticipating the play and picking spots) and thinks the game very well. Remains to be seen if he fills his potential.

Voted for Kodos

Andersson is a better player now, and will likely be so in every year of his contract, IMO.
Glad to see that even though the GMs change up there, they still act the same as the previous ones.

D men don’t need to hit if they control the puck more. If they are chasing they end up hitting.

Nurse signed right to UFA status.
Signed a bunch of 1 year deals.
I still have yet to see him make a move that adds to his core long term
|
And if you paid attention to Holland's moves in Detroit during his last years there, it shouldn't be surprising that he's slowly, but surely anchoring another franchise to bad contracts.

Agree with this, Nurse is really dumb in his own end, he has some nice offensive skills, but they're not elite. I'd also say that the Nurse we see today, is the Nurse we'll see for the rest of his career with declining physical skills. I think we'll look back in a couple of years and Nurse will be far behind RA.
Basically Nurse reminds me of Dion just before the bottom fell out on him.

Can’t get a worse term than 2 years to UFA. Reeks of a team in massive cap trouble.

IMO $5.6 million annually should have bought more than two years. We are talking about a guy that's a 2nd pairing defenseman not a 1st pairing guy. You can understand why agents like Holland so much. He certainly didn't drive a hard bargain on this extension.

Yeah, no kidding. Nurse's QO would have been $3.5 m, I believe, and I find it difficult to fathom that an arbitrator would have awarded much more than $5.0 m for one or two years.
