I see this being quoted one day...I'm sure that is the pr spin but the reality is he took a 2 year deal that brings him right to UFA

In what universe does Darnell Nurse get a contract starting with an 8? I mean, please do, but that's just terrible.

I don't understand why the Oilers would only secure him for two more seasons. He now holds all the cards when it comes to negotiating the next deal as he can simply go to free agency. At least the Flames held on to Brodie until he was into his late twenties.

Jesus, I thought it was 5.6 over TWO years, not AAV. Seriously, someone’s going to pay Nurse 8 million a year? Seriously? SERIOUSLY?

5.6 is as high as they can fit the cap and still be able to sign the rest of the RFAs and a backup goalie. Any longer than two years and the cap wouldn’t be manageable. Trying to delay the inevitable but whoops, now he can walk.

8 mln AAV would make him the 7th highest paid D in the NHL. Ahead of several Norris winners. The only one in the top 10 to not have at least one Norris nomination.

Seriously?

It’s 5.6 not 8

Only the oilers would like that contract. It lines up to no one. Even Trouba, whose contract is itself an outlier, is still for a way more accomplished player buying FA years.

A 2 year deal for nurse should have started with a 4. If not a 3.

They won’t even be able to claim the hindsight of the raisaitl deal.

Yes, but isn’t there relief in Shelbyville that it “doesn’t be start with an 8?” A previous poster said that. Please correct me if that’s misconstrued, but there appears to be a belief his next (UFA) deal will be 8?

I'm not sure if it would even surprise me if top four defencemen were getting $8 mil per season in 2022.

Spurgeon and Trouba just got $7 plus and I don't consider these guys super elite players.

Ryan Murray just got 2 x $4.5 and he's only played 70+ games once in seven seasons.

It was reported a couple weeks ago that Nurse is seeking $8.0. I believe this deal gets him there on his next contract if he re-signs in Edmonton.

Oiler fans might like the 5.6 mil cap hit but is it really a good deal for them?

5.6 mil AAV at 4+ years would've benefited the Oilers, but it's not. It's only until he becomes UFA. So as a bridge deal, the Oilers could've taken advantage of the fact that he's an RFA and sign him for a great deal, but they didnt. They gave him enough to fit him under their cap

So Holland essentially walked Nurse to his UFA years with Nurse getting the most that he could from the Oilers

LOL

If he was seeking 8M on this contract, he’ll be looking for more than that as a UFA. Add about 10% more to his ask for 2 years of cap inflation and another 10% for UFA overpay, and he’s probably asking for north of 9.5M next time.

That was me, it was nonsense when it was reported. (Well taken out of context actually)

Lower to make the cap work. I don’t think his next one will start with an 8 either.

What would be the number if the length was seven years? It's not close to 8 because it's two RFA years.

Walking one of your best players right to UFA due to cap constraints can hardly be considered a good move.

Nurse had arbitration rights, so if he didn't like what the Oilers were offerring on a bridge he could have went the arbitration route.

You think they would have awarded less? It's possible I suppose, but arbitration seems like it usually rewards the player.

Same issue as Treliving with Tkachuk. Lacking the adequate cap space to make the right deal, so settling for a bad deal that walks the player right to free agency.

Tkachuk is a rfa at the end of this contract if I am not mistaken.
Nurse is a UFA.
