This excuse is getting quite old. Almost every player in the NHL has gone through this. As have many of us on here.

Bennett's looked better than Gaudreau lately IMO. So what does that say about our team? Some of you here really underrate what he can bring and the potential he still has.
He's one of the only guys who plays with some grit who actually has some good puck skills. We're lacking grit. So trade him?
Hammer underrated a lot this year. Bennett's been underrated for the past couple years by many. Gaudreau massively overrated this year by many. I know those takes won't be popular but hey, can't agree with many of the takes in this thread.

And did it affect your daily performance? Doesn't matter if other NHLers have gone through it, it's Backlund first child no?
Not sure what your point is. If Backlund is having sleep deprivation it will be affecting his performance. That much is clear from the latest sleep research.

and all babies and all parenting experiences are exactly the same. Nobody has any idea what's going on with these dudes inside their head except them. If the coach does, he's certainly doing the right things to address it.

One of the big issues with Bennett is discipline. While you admire his exuberance, he has yet to show an ability to channel his aggression properly as it relates to disciplined decision making.
Once again he leads the team in negative penalty differential at -0.96/60. The only two players on the team over -0.5/60 are Rinaldo and Stone. Even Backlund in this nightmare season of his is right at -0.5/60 for instance. The only other forward in the negative is Jankowski. (Frolik was even worse than Bennett, FWIW)
Whether you agree with it or not, one of the biggest parts of internal accountability teams employ relates to disciplined play and that is magnified when the poor discipline largely occurs in the offensive zone. The reality is Bennett isn’t going to be given an extended run in the top six until he shows he can play an aggressive but intelligent game. Once he does, he’ll undoubtedly enjoy a breakout season.
What a frustrating player. The clone of Benoit Pouliot.

Quit being such a donkey. I’m not trying to excuse Backlund’s play. My point was that the comment about him playing like he doesn’t want to be in Calgary when we know he likes it here was a frickin dumb comment. There can be other reasons why his play is a bit off.

That's so dismissive.
I hope no one at your office brushed you aside when you were a parent of newborns.

Sucks that other teams don’t have this problem, though.

Except that you explicitly tied his having a kid to his on-ice performance, twice. Backlund is not unique in his having a kid, and he spends half his time away from home anyway. The original take was extra spicy, and so was yours. Just own it.

Why use it as an excuse then? As you point out, no one knows what is going on. Have other NHLers experienced the same protracted slump with their first child?

Dismissive of who? I’m not dismissive of Backlund who to my knowledge has never brought this up as an excuse.
Why make stuff up about sleep deprivation when we have no idea what is going on? Have you noticed a trend in NHLers performance after the birth of a child?

Well when Talbot had his, he then played the best hockey of his career. (the one Oiler playoff season)
they call him dadbot and was watched in awe.
Being a parent of a newborn is a poor excuse or assumption for a players play.
It's worse than using "he must be injured" or "he doesn't want to be here any more"

Dreger's that guy in your meetings who contributes nothing worthy, but never fails to speak up to ensure he isn't "too quiet" based on feedback he's received during past performance reviews.

This rebuttal is used so often, but never supported with evidence. Can someone point to a few of the game(s) where this has happened? Even just a general guess of which month where you thought it happened, or which opponent in which season, etc.
If/when it hasn't worked, is it 100% Bennett's fault?

Well if you can't get Brodie signed or you don't want to sign him and keep him...you better be shopping him to get something back regardless of a Giordano injury or not.
This team is looking less and less like a playoff team every day, and they certainly are not looking like a team anyone would fear if they did make the playoffs.
Easy for me to say as I'm not toast if he doesn't make the playoffs like Trelving coudl be, so a longer term look may be less likely to happen.
I hope that ownership is willing to advise the GM that he is to take a longer term look at the organization and the assets, and allow him to reset things if needed. But the way the Flames and pretty much every Canadian team operates...I expect they will make poor short term decisions that they'll regret in 2-3 years time.

I think it's more like way overrated by many from the start of the career and pretty much many have just moved on and accepted the fact that he is what he is on the bottom rung of the team. A change in scenery might do him and the Flames some good TBH. Regardless if Bennett does well in the playoffs in the previous 2 or 3 times, he's useless if the Flames don't get into the playoffs this year and the next. If Tre can get something for him now, it's better than nothing any time down the road.
